AIBU to be annoyed with this buyer?

I was selling an item on ebay. It's worth £160, the item is discontinued and I was selling it for £110. Brand new and with the box. Large item and very heavy. P&P was stated at £10.

The listing came to an end with no bidders. Within the hour I had a message from a guy asking to buy the item as he really wanted it. Also, could I knock some money off? He asked me to relist the item with a Buy Now option with preferably money off my original starting bid.

I explained that I paid £110 for the item so I couldn't go any lower other wise I would be out of pocket and that I was selling it without a profit. I also pointed out that it's a discontinued item with already a substantial amount off the retail price so it was already a really good bargain.

He said fine so I listed it for £110 and he purchased it right away. He then emailed me again asking that seeing as how he'd paid so quickly, would it be possible for me to go to the post office that afternoon and post it.

The item was listed for 2nd class post with 2 day dispatch time. However, as a gesture of good will, I agreed and went straight to the post office.

Now, the postage came up lower than expected, so I opted for 1st class not 2nd class as advertised. It came to £6.

He then emailed me the next morning thanking me for the item and that he was really pleased and it, however, as the postage came to £6, please could I refund him the £4. He said me sending him the £4 via PayPal would be sufficient.

I feel I've already bent backwards for this buyer and abided by his slightly demanding requests as it is. The postage was clearly stated and by purchasing the item he accepted a contract to agree to pay.

To add to insult the ebay fees/paypal have come to almost £20 so I'm actually really out of pocket after the sale

P and p is for postage AND packaging and any cists incurred with shipping (e.g. petrol to post office) not just the price of the stamp. Remind him of this.
Also remind him he agreed to your charges by buying, and that there are charges deducted, even from postage.
Don't give him refund!

He is being a cheeky sod. Ebay does allow you to charge a reasonable amount for packaging and your expenses in posting an item (time, petrol, etc). Even if the P&P IS very high, he agreed to it by buying your item. P&P is clearly stated in listings, if he thought it was too high, he could have moved on. If he didn't realise it was too high, he should have checked. When I first started selling I did charge too much for P&P and I did refund people the difference, but I was never asked to.

YANBU! Keep the emails saying he received it. Tell him the £2 was for postage and packing (which includes petrol/parking to post it). Thank him and be all nicey nicey - how great he loves it etc if you need good feedback.

Actually, PayPal take a percentage too! I used to make such a loss with postage when I was a seller.

I'm pretty sure you can put a reply on any negative or neutral feedback so you could always explain there if he does! Definitely don't refund!!

I'd check eBay forums because you can't just mark up p&p charges - too many sellers were overinflating them and undercharging, so they paid less % on selling fees to eBay and eBay came down hard in favour of buyers.

The fees are the reason we don't sell on eBay anymore, total rip off.

Tell him no you won't be refunding as it was stated £10 for postage and packaging and he was happy with that. Maybe tell him that to accommodate his request to post that same day you had to get a taxi so it's tough shit! Don't worry about sounding cheeky - he's hardly bothered about how he's coming across.

You've massively overcharged him on P&P and eBay/PayPal will be on his side if he raises a complaint.

Not his problem that you agreed to 110 and now you'd been stung by the fees.

I would refund him a couple of quid if I were you.

Trolls yes I've been stung before. Sold an item for £3.50 with £2.80 P&P. The P&P cost was actually £9 so I took a loss on the entire sale! I'm always weary of P&P after that but I always strive to get it as accurate and fair as possible.

I don't think an extra £4 is "massively overcharging" him. Postage was £6 leaving £4 for any bubble wrap/paper/bag and any parking fees if she has to pay to park.

Only business sellers can charge for time, petrol etc. You can charge £4 for packing though.
