... on the news... It's been going on for nearly two years now... Why do we need to listen to the entire speech and speculation?

Yes he is a bit of a maveric
Yes he wants to be different
and it is quite likely we may be affected.. But we can't change anything or him. We have to wait and see what actually happens....

Can we have some news when there is some news?

You know what you can do, don't you?

Turn the TV off or look for another source.

News is 'anything that interests a large part of your readership'.

Don't watch it then!

Most of us are watching and reading because this is an absolutely massive event, this radical new presidency. Most of us are either thrilled or frightened and want to know and understand all we can.

If you're not bothered, fine.

What a stupid thread.

It is quite an important event, actually. Just so you know.

Have some light relief from it all OP,
totally worth it all the way to the end if you've not seen it, it's kept me going since the campaign trail. Be warned though, it's addictive! (and we so need politicians to do that!)

It's pretty important.

It's more than him just being "a bit of a maverick"

Read some of the new stuff on there - particularly around military aggression, guns and fracking.

Or y'know, just switch over and pretend it's not an issue. 🙄

Sorry, can't embed, but still worth watching

I actually think the op has a point. The inauguration was an exercise in egomania and we were subjected to it on our major channels. He's not our leader. It was like a fucking coronation! It was a transfer of power. They should have just made him clock in.

The inauguration events are the same no matter who is becoming president actually. Hmm

I just chose not to watch the inauguration. Caught a tiny bit by accident and all the former presidents faces looked like they were being forced to swallow dog poo, which is basically how I felt. So I turned it back off again. However,
I will keep up to date with this news.
It is too important and too terrifying to ignore. It is a dark turn for the whole world.

I watched to try and get a sense of exactly how fucked we all are, but was surprised to see how muted (almost absent) the support was, both in the crowd and behind Trump in the assembled politicians & establishment figures. It gave me a tiny bit of hope that Trump is not going to have a cakewalk - the political masses could stymie him at every step and it looks like there is a huge, unrepresented swell of the electorate who will be holding him to account. There will be midterms soon enough where the electorate may punish the Republican party for their vanity, desperation to win and hubris in allowing this dangerous man to represent their party and lead the country.

Yes he could now blow up the entire planet....but hey, that won't impact on us will it....

The inauguration speech is individual to the incoming president.

Trump's speech was a masterclass in isolations, aggressive alpha male bullshit.

But his policies are the truly worrying bit.

Because it's quite important!

I've not been watching since Thursday as the man makes me sick- I used my off button!!

Oh yeah - don't forget that it was the failure of the US financial regulatory framework and banks that caused the global financial meltdown in 2008 and the untold misery that followed. We (UK taxpayers) are still propping up banks here. People are rightly concerned about the US election. What is shit for the US is shit for all
of us. YADBU.

The bit that is getting my goat is the constant saying nothing.

In November we were told in January Donald Trump will be sworn in
A week ago we were told next week Donald Trump will be sworn in
On Thursday we were told tomorrow Donald Trump will be sworn in
Yesterday morning we were told this afternoon Donald Trump will be sworn in"
Then we had the entire event live..

All this non coverage masks other news. What he does tomorrow will be news.

You only have to look at what has come off the White House page and what has gone on to know that he isn't a 'maverick', he is a scary, dim, bigoted man.

Report
SmileEachDay · 21/01/2017 08:30

And what has gone on to it wits. Frightening.

Yes indeed , what he does will have a profound effect on us.

But so will everything the Chinese president does, as will everything Mr Putin does. Indeed I suspect that China has more effect on our lives than America.

But we don't get wall to wall coverage of their entire leadership process covering everey nuance for two years.

And if Hillary had got the shout.... we would still get the same wall to wall coverage.

I think op, although I understand your points is that Trump's stance on NATO will be the key factor in deciding how Putin continues, particularly in Eastern Europe and against the EU. His election is a gamechanger for Putin.
