To miss my mum's trifle

The same every year, halved sponge squares spread with raspberry jam shoved into a glass bowl, sprinkled with exactly a sherry glass of sherry (yes, she had sherry glasses), followed by "That looks a bit mean " and then pouring half of the bottle of Cyprus sherry over the sponges, followed by Bird's custard, whipped cream added when set.

What always got me was the precise measuring, followed by the totally random splosh, every bloody year .

Tasted of nothing much than sherry!

But somehow I miss it.

My uncle insisted on salt cod on Christmas Eve. Even though none of us like it and v few ate it other than politeness. We still make it even though he is no longer with us

How bizarre, I was talking to dp only an hour ago saying how my mum always used to make a lovely trifle at Xmas. Her dinners were dreadful (roast potatoes done in the chip pan, over dry turkey, soggy carrots and sprouts... And that was it!!) but the trifle made up for it 😁😁

She was a great but very basic cook, traditional norther working class food - corned beef hash, meat pie, liver and onions etc - which were all lovely and I wish I had got the recipes off her .. But Xmas dinner was just a tad rubbish, apart from the trifle

My late aunt (christian and teetotal) always used to let her hand slip with the sherry for her trifle. I miss that too.

We used to go to my Mum's on Boxing Day, it was like a second Christmas Day for everyone. There was always trifle for pudding, sponges soaked in sherry, a layer of fruit, thick custard, whipped cream, nuts. It was delicious - I've tried to recreate it but somehow mine are not the same.

I had a rellie whose baking was always generous with the sherry but at this time of year we used to joke about driving under the influence of Auntie R's Christmas cake.

She's been dead these forty years and I am having a little weep thinking about her,

My DH's lovely Nan used to make up a Birds trifle mix and spell out the DCs initials with the sprinkles. They loved it and still talk about it 20 years on.

Sounds exactly like my mum's trifle, except she didn't bother with the sherry measuring and went straight for the half bottle! And it always had to be made in the same bowl... I can't eat a trifle if it's not made in that bowl!

Her stuffing too... Can never duplicate it. Although I am fortunate that all the recipes I thought were her own family specialties I discovered were in fact from the Readers Digest Cookery Year book so at least I have a starting point!

5 years gone and I miss her more than ever this year....

My grandma died this year. I have made a trifle in her trifle bowl this year for her. Without fail, every year it was not set and she spilled it. I'm thinking of throwing it on someone's lap later for added authenticity

That sounds remarkably similar to my Mum's trifle. She died 13 years ago, and it's been a tradition for us to make the trifle each Christmas. A way of including her in the day.

I have a tiny little plastic tub (think container that camera film comes in). It's on my windowsill in the bedroom in a wooden box. It has some of my mums ashes in. I gave it a kiss this morning and wished her happy Christmas.

Is it too early for wine? (I'm joking).

We've only just started having lentil soup as a starter again (7 years on). My mum always made the soup and no-one can replicate it. I've tried this year so hopefully it tastes as good as it looks 🎅🏻
