AIBU?

To think we're on the brink of WW3?

If the US and Russia become at war with each other, can we possibly stay out of it?

What if Donald Trump is president when it all kicks off?

Should I buy a gun? Or build a shelter? Or stock up on tins?

I am genuinely frightened.

US and Russia will never be in a proper war with each other. At worst, it'll be a Cold War style tension.

US and Russia both have nuclear weaponry, and Russia is allied with China. It's too much of a risk for the US to push that boundary. It's not in Russia or China's interest either.

So why did Putin call all his diplomats' families back home?

He's telling anyone who will listen they're on the brink of war with the US.

If he continues to piss the US off, what's to stop them? Surely nuclear stalemate doesn't exclude conventional warfare?

Maybe I'm being thick.

He's been saying that for the better part of a decade.

US and Russia are equally shit. Russia is being pissed off by the US just as much.

No one's going to willingly get into a proper war with either the US, China or Russia.

Nah, it won't happen. For all his craziness Putin is too sensible, and too happy enjoying all the luxuries the world has to offer, to start a war that will essentially annihilate a planet. Russia are sabre rattling is all.

What the fuck was so dangerous about the 80s?! Apart from Michael Jackson and Jimmy Savile The Cold War wasn't really affecting people then, was it? I also lived through the 80s and had no idea they'd even been a Cold War until the wall came down.

Is that a serious question?

I think the consequences of climate change are far more terrifying and a likelier prospect than ww3.

and Russia are equally shit. Russia is being pissed off by the US just as much. yes, of course.

DH is very upset with me for bringing it up. He told me I couldn't possibly fight off a bunch of Russian soilders with my single gun. I told him the gun was to kill the DCs and me to avoid what happens to women and children in warfare. He's not prepared to discuss it.

Ahhhh bless. Stock up on tins, if it makes you feel better. Also under 'other stuff' on here you will find the 'Preppers' section. Fill your boots. I know you might be worried but as they say above it has been worse than this!

I think the world will be fucked over by natural disasters/climate change not by nuclear weapons.

Actually OP you're not being entirely unreasonable. Yes, indeed, we had a similar situation in the 80's and so many of us have lived through this kind of stuff before. THAT SAID, there are different things going on these days which makes it a bit more complicated.

Keeping it as simple as possible... and I'm not up for a big debate on it:

No, I don't think we'll go into WWIII but Russia ARE trying to provoke the US into conflict; it won't go all the way to nuclear war (Putin is too clever for that - he's a nut job but he's not stupid).... but it does have the potential to get rather unpleasant and I suspect we will enter into another Cold War type situation with various conflicts going on. Putin is playing games right now; it's kind of like poking the US with a big stick and winding it up while they're dealing with this election. It's provocation - for the moment at least.

As for Trump; I strongly doubt he will win this thing; he's a complete psychopath though - it's baffling to me how anyone is voting for him. He should be getting sectioned, not running the USA! But don't worry - the odds on him being President for the next couple of terms - or even the next term are actually very low.

So - no - I don't think you need to be building any bunkers but you're not ENTIRELY unreasonable in that there ARE tensions building, stuff IS going on that is causing great concern, but I don't see it ending in WWIII. Using nukes wouldn't be in anyone's interest - including Putin's and Trump/Clinton's.

Honestly I think we're probably all going to wiped out by some weird pandemic.

It's been a while since we've had one of them.

Actually when you go to the Eden centre they have this big evolutionary timeline. We're well well well overdue an extinction level event.
