A high-protein, low-carb toast. Instead of an egg and some veggies, which the diet plan I am following is requiring.

You're a grown person (grown enough to have found Mumsnet and successfully posted a thread, anyway) - eat what you like!

What diet are you doing?

Oh fuck all that restrictive shit.

I have a friend who is a counsellor who reckons that what you east for breakfast isn't just about the physical affects but the psychological ones. if you eat something you enjoy first thing, you feel happier for the rest of the day. Gotta be something in that, I reckon Grin

I 'mix things up' for breakfast according to what I can face. Not a breakfast person but ALWAYS eat something as I know it helps fuel me for the morning. I can manage healthy site (porridge or eggs) a couple of times a week, cereal a couple of times a week (nothing majorly shite or uber healthy, just stuff like Fruit N Fibre or museli and yoghurt), and then I have toast on days I feel like it and croissants on Sundays Grin

I eat very healthily for lunch and dinner, but go easy on myself at breakfast time. Life is short and mornings are hard for some of us Grin

Yanbu

I found breakfast the hardest, especially if I was making lovely toast for DH.

Some of the low carb pancake recipes aren't bad and at least they feel like a proper breakfast food.

Oh god it's not that 1-2-3 diet that all my friends are on is it?

I cannot do diets that totally restrict anything that tastes nice certain types of food (mainly because I have digestive ishoos and need to eat crappy white bread instead of lovely brown seedy bread)

I'm low-carbing at the moment. I'm shovelling road kill and cholesterol down my neck and daydreaming about watermelon. If I ate watermelon, I would feel terribly guilty and a total failure. How messed up can you get? I feel like I'm setting a terrible example to my kids - "I can't eat this/Can't eat that..." and they see me eating things like diet jelly (cup full of chemicals, anyone?) that I wouldn't let them touch for love or money..... Meanwhile, I have managed to lose just over 40kgs this year (6.3 stone) which tells you what a bad example I was before this dietary adventure.... If it helps, there are quite a few recipes for "cloud bread" which is a carb-free substitute made with eggs. I've not tried it, but it looks nice in the photos. Good luck!!!

Oh toast. I'd kill for toast. Kill with my bare hands. I'd kill you OP and I don't really like killing innocent people Grin

The trouble with toast for breakfast is it sets the scene for the rest of the day - well with me anyway! If I start I simply won't stop. All. Fucking. Day.
So the only way is not to start.

What I wouldn't do for some toast RIGHT NOW!

Ok, after whining about it, the craving for toast is now gone. However, I don't really want to eat an egg and some veggies too.

I broke and had beans on toast for tea (with butter), it was heaven

Have the toast. Try a different diet, seriously life is too short to have what you enjoy.

I've never been a fan of all this low carb, high fat, cabbage soup stuff. A little bit of all in small portions has never let me down and soon shifted my baby weight

You want the toast because our digestive systems are designed for a diet high in carbohydrate. We are not designed to get all our energy from protein and fat.

Just eat the toast (make it proper wholegrain bread with proper butter).

And I really don't understand the MN obsession with eggs for breakfast. Other sources of protein are available...

Exactly. Diets don't often work (at least long term). Moderation and balance do.

But if you are following a low carb diet and fancy a piece of toast some breads are lower in carbs than others, for example Warburtons farmhouse white is 18.9g carbs per slice, whereas the milk loaf is almost half that.

God no, who would ever eat eggs and veg together, especially at breakfast?

Oh, screw that. If you want a slice of toast for breakfast, have it!
Sorry, but I'm all for believing everything in moderation.
I don't believe in cutting out whole food groups such as carbs or whatever.
Cut out the junk food, alcohol, and move more. Get exercising.
Only way to lose weight and keep it off.

Eggs and vegetables for breakfast! Oh dear my office colleagues would not thank me if I ate that 😊

I did the cabbage diet many moons ago. Only the once and never again. I was poorly on it and ballooned - I looked like I was pregnant with 10 babies about to pop out! only a slight exaggeration .

If you want toast for breakfast just have some. Have it in moderation. Well done on your weight loss so far Smile

I'm torn!
I low carbed for 9 months last year and despite sometimes feeling bored of no carbs, felt so good.
I was lighter, felt healthier (I'm not saying that I WAS), and definitely looked better than I do now I've started shovelling carbs down me!
I now have a devil and an angel on my shoulder arguing with me at breakfast.
"Don't eat that."
"But it tastes so good."
"There are other things you can eat."
"But it tastes so good. Just have one slice."
I'm greedy though, with no self control,
My PT has given me a good low carb diet plan, but recommends carbs when I'm doing a weights day.
I'm fact, he's not averse to carbs at all, it's me that thinks they're bad news!!
If you really really want the toast, bloody eat it! With proper butter Grin

Eat your toast. But not just toast, or toast with jam, or similar, or you'll be starving by 11. Toast with eggs/cheese/peanut butter/smoked salmon/whatever, you'll be fine. I low carb most of the day but I do love bread at breakfast time.

I struggle with low carb so I compromise a bit and I'm still losing weight
Breakfast is a handful of granola or oat based cereal with Greek yog and berries
Or I have a piece of toasted spelt and rye bread with avocado, feta and red onion
I don't tend to eat any other carbs the rest of the day then

I don't really believe in specific diets or fads. Low carb is generally bonkers and only works for people because they overall eat fewer calories. Don't get sucked into other peoples delusions and feel less happy as a result!! Do what seems best for you.

Generally I think (and was taught in nutrition/metabolism at medical school) that:
A calorie is a calorie in pure energy terms
Healthy mix of all major food groups and nutrients should be aimed for

I've tried every diet going, nine of them work, especially low carb as it isn't sustainable. I now have a personal trainer, I have a set amount of calories which I log on my fitness pal and have opened my diary so she can see it. I have to eat carbs so I can exercise. With my fitness pal you can eat what you want really but it really helps with portion size which I am sure is the problem most people have. A portion of pasta looks so small until you cook it. She can see what I am eating a suggest what I may need to reduce slightly. I am also losing inches because of the training, I concentrate a lot on weights. I am happier than I have ever been as although I still have a lot to lose I can see the results with the inches, body fat as well as on the scales.

I find with things like low carb that yes they may work but as soon as you start eating carbs again all the weeks/months of deprivation don't seem worth it as it all goes back on.

Hopefully I won't need to use my fitness pal forever as I will naturally eat the right things and right size portions once I have been doing it long enough.

Carbs, fat, protein etc are all good. A little bit of junk food isn't going to harm you. If I fancy a packet of crisps then I will just adjust what I am having for tea and pick something lower calorie. I eat protein so I am more full up. I don't eat a huge amount of carbs, but the carbs I do eat are better than I used to and if I want a piece of toast or a sandwich I will have it and again adjust the rest of my food for the day.
