Mayonaise - Why is it slathered over everything ???

Am I the only person totally pissed off that when ever I order a sandwich etc anywhere it comes totally slathered in masses of mayo even though
there is no mention of it on the menu. I don't like mayo and if I see it on the menu I ask for my food without it. I also ask 'does this have mayo on it'?
So why the hell do they insist on trying to feed it me using excuses such as
'there is only a bit' 'all our sandwiches have mayo on them' If I ask for NO MAYO this is what I want.

I can't say I've ever noticed. Whenever I've had mayo in a sandwich it's usually something mayo or something and mayo. Is it a regional thing maybe?

I am NOT a journalist - just last Saturday I went out for lunch and ordered a BLT - it came with, according to the menu a side salad and coleslaw. I asked for the side salad with no dressing and no coleslaw. It never occurred to me to order the sandwich with NO mayo as a BLT does not usually have it and there was no mention of it on the menu description.

If this had been done before then I am sorry but I have not seen it.

I have this problem. I cannot just pick up a sandwich when out and about as they all have mayo in with the rare exception of a couple of supermarkets who may have plain ham or cheese. It's sooooo annoying.

Totally agree with you, op. DH and I don't like mayo, although I can put up with it in small amounts. We think it's because it's cheap. Splodge everything into a bowl of mayo, then when you're making the mass-produced sandwiches you just splat a dollop of the gloop onto the bread. No faffing about buttering the bread or arranging different ingredients. Just one big, gloopy, blob. Urgh.

I ordered a chicken and bacon sandwich a while ago, no mention of mayo on the menu. It was like biting into a thick oily mess and actually made me feel sick.

The amount of chicken and bacon in my sandwich seem to be pretty minimal and I suspect they put all the mayo on in an effort to cover up the fact that there's not very much else between the slices of bread.

Agreed the vile slop is on everything, I have to study and inspect shop butties as some don't mention it in the title (yes you M&S cheese and tomato roll that should say WITH MAYO)
I'm fussy and I'm forever asking for something to be left off and I get "just a bit of it" because "it would be boring without it" up to and including bacon on a veggie salad.
my other dislike is beans. Go for a cooked brekkie, no mention of them on the menu, brekkie turns up covered in beans.
If I send something back bcause it's wrong, 50% of the time the replacement is the same food with a different plate/bread and it gets sent back again as there's residual beans/mayo on parts of the food.
I'm glad I'm not allergic, it must be a painful nightmare eating out.

What an odd topic to accuse the OP of being journalist I'm more confused by your post Ecct than I am the OP.

I can't see the daily mail running an article on the preference for salad dressings.

Some people just don't like mayo I just can't see why you'd think any one expressing this oppinion wash journalist.

I quite like the stuff however I agree with the Op the assumption that it needs to be on everything and for everyone is irriatating and some times it just doesn't go with the flavours. BLT is a perfect example actually I wouldn't put mayo with bacon more tomato katchup which I hate.

Trying to by a pre packed sandwich without the stuff is impossible

YANBU, I find it weird that some supermarket sandwiches state 'no mayo' on them and then mayo ones don't say anything, as if mayo is a default of sandwich making! I like mayo but it shouldn't just be assumed to be part of all sandwiches unless stated otherwise

I'm with you, OP. I long for the days when you could buy a sandwich without mayo. I've completely given up buying pre-packed sandwiches now as I know what the deal is - the only places I'll buy sandwiches if out are the ones where there's a counter and they make the sandwich to order. I can't think why the major chains don't do mayo-free options, but I suppose I'm saving a lot of money so shouldn't complain.
