IKEA delivery charges are ridiculous

AIBU in thinking that IKEA charge a ridiculous amount for their delivery. I only wanted to buy the cheap wardrobes that are £39 for DS's room, but I refuse to pay £35 on top of that for delivery, it's nearly doubling the cost!!!
Unfortunately I don't drive so going to get the wardrobes from store is not an option. I think I'll look elsewhere instead.

It depends. We bought furniture for a 4 bed house and had it delivered, on a Saturday, for £35.

YABU, that's one of the reasons why their products are cheap - they don't subsidise delivery costs.

They don't really want to deliver. They make most of their revenue from people picking up extra bits while they're wandering round all the showrooms.

I paid it at Christmas, for delivery of a few Billy book cases. Worth every penny IMO because it would have been a 5-hour round trip.

It's rubbish for one item but brilliant for many. We gave them a list at 11am and they picked it all and delivered it to us by 2pm for £35. I couldn't have done it cheaper if I hired a van and did it myself. The order included a kingsize bed and mattress, 3 wardrobes, 2 chests of drawers, a dining table and 6 chairs. They even carried my dining table and chairs up all the stairs (3 storey house) and would have done the same with the wardrobes.

They don't subsidise delivery.

I suppose IABU, I was just shocked at such a high delivery cost, but if I was purchasing quite a few products on there then I wouldn't have a problem with it as it would only be a small percentage of the rest of the bill. I think for now I'll just have a mooch around for somewhere a little cheaper on delivery and go back to IKEA when I've more money to order a few things and can then justify the charge a bit more

Could you use a cab service?. Will probably work out cheaper than the delivery.

I have before now, our local ikea has cabs waiting outside.

That is the cost for large items for all items though (I.e if one item is over 25kg). Have used this service twice but both times bought loads for the one price. Well worth it.
Also used the £7.50 parcel delivery too which is for items under 25kg as long as whole delivery isn't over 100kg. Also well worth it

Most people have become used to companies charging very low rates for delivery. Rates which are perhaps too low.

Personally I would fully expect to pay £35 for furniture items to be delivered if I lived more than a couple of miles from the shop- Size and weight of potential purchase means that 2 people have to go out on the run to deliver them safely, multiple items as well.

We live a long way from the nearest store so when you have figured in petrol costs, eating etc the delivery charge is OK especially if you don't enjoy wandering around the store.

Why don't you look for IKEA products on ebay or Gumtree. There are normally loads. You would still have to pay someone to deliver but you might be able to do it cheaper than £35.

The people who are going to be hit by the charge are people like the op, who don't have a lot of money and don't drive. It's hard to find furniture cheaper than ikea, but if you're actually poor you have to pay more for it. That goes for lots of other things as well.

What about asking if anyone else wants to place an order on a local Facebook group? People here do when they want an order and club together to get it all delivered to one address and split delivery costs.

That's why, in my group of friends, if one of us says 'I'm off to Ikea today' everyone else appears with a list of things they need!

I used a man with van to get a mattress delivered as it was cheaper to pay them for an hour than the delivery charge.

They don't want to deliver that's why it costs so much. Have you tried local facebook selling pages,ones near me are full of 'man with van' type ads,though depending how far away you are from Ikea it might not be any cheaper.

FWIW dh and I spend the best part of £100 getting out ikea kitchen delivered.

It'd cost us that to hire a small van to fit our purchases into as they wouldn't fit in our car so it's worth it for us. The reason the stuff is cheap is because they make cut backs in places that other stores don't. Home delivery is one of those places.

You all make a good point, I suppose that's one of the reasons IKEA products are such good prices. I certainly won't rule them out in the future when I've more money to spend on other items, but right now I just can't bring myself to spend as much on delivery as I am doing on the product itself.
I've found a different wardrobe now on Amazon anyway which is £47 and £8 delivery so I'm going with that instead.
