AIBU?

To ask why you hide a thread or a whole board?

Just that really.

It's never occurred to me to hide a whole board/topic as for me they always show up in Active regardless. I'm not meaning to start a TAAT but rather one inspired by one if that passes. But anyway if you hide threads why do you do it? And if you hide entire topics... why? Outside of Chat and AIBU, I really fail to see where the rest of the traffic goes [confuded]

I hid my ante-natal thread after I miscarried. I didn't want to see reminders of people happily expecting October 2013 babies.

I hide things like pregnancy baby names etc that I have no interest in. I'd rather my active list was things I was interested. I think I have more hidden boards than visible ones Confused

I hid the pregnancy board after my miscarriage

Usually because people do want to see it. As op said something could be upsetting.

Personally I hide threads that aren't of interest to me. Easier to pick out threads I want to go back to.

I have never hid a topic though.

I hide baby names and anything to do with babies in general, because it's of no interest to me. Well over all that!

I'm ttc (fertility issues) and hide the pregnancy board and baby names. It's just not something I need to see when I'm struggling

I hide threads that I find annoying, goady OP's so I don't engage any further.

All the baby topics are hidden. They just aren't relevant to me, ditto the pregnancy boards.

I've hidden a couple of threads, one because the title made me feel quite sick and another because I was sick of seeing it and it gave me the rage after reading it. It stopped me going back on it!

I have a few topics hidden as they are of no interest to me and/or I have nothing of value to contribute. I haven't seen one of them pop up in 'Active' and one of them is an extremely popular topic, so I'm not sure why you're still seeing yours there.

I've only hidden threads when the title, subject, or comments posted on them have deeply upset me.

I hid Baby Names because it really winds me up - I don't know why, it just does! Good news is that the threads in that topic don't show up in Active. I think I have hidden a few boards and it means that Active stands a better chance of containing more threads that interest me.

I thought the whole point of hiding a topic was so it didn't come up in active Confused

I've hidden that sex thread called fisting because it makes me feel a bit gippy. I also hid loads of threads about the 90s and what people remember and what fun they had because i had a bit of a shit time in the 90s and I don't like to think of it.

I have never hidden anything. Don't click on anything I know I'm not remotely interested in, know I will be offended by or just looks boring!
Although the function of hiding an actual Poster would be very well received Grin

I hide anything to do with child abuse because i find they really play on my mind.

I also hide anything about anyone claiming they're miraculously changed their biological sex as its all so absolute bullshit and had enough of reading about it.

I've hidden about a third of the topics. Most of the specifically 'baby' stuff, as my children are teens now. Style and Beauty has long gone, my interest in handbags and mascara has been almost precisely zero for years now. 'Sex' went very recently, mostly because of the revolting and upsetting 'Fisting' thread.

How do you hide topics and threads? Does doing so stop it coming up in active conversations?

I use the mobile site if that makes a difference.

Oh and I hide the 'here are my symptoms an i pregnant' or 'I had sex in this date, could I be pregnant'

They give me the irrational rage and I just want to type 'piss on a stick no one on mumsnet can answer with and certainty'

I've never hidden a whole board . I only ever use 3 or 4 of them though, I just ignore the rest.
When I hide a thread it's usually because I've got too involved in them. Sometimes my competitive streak can kick in and I end up just posting for the sake of it or just making a prat of myself so I just hide it to stop myself going back to it. Just as in real life sometimes its best just to walk away.
On other forums I sometimes put other posters on ignore, because I find it's best not to engage with some people. Of course that facility isn't available on mumsnet (wish it was sometimes).

I get fisting might not be your thing but what's upsetting or revolting about someone else enjoying it?

I hide heaps of topics.

If you've hidden a topic then it doesn't show in Active Confused

I hide the threads to do with ghosts or wooooo stuff, I'll spot the title when I'm doing the night feed and won't be able to sleep then. Yes I'm a huge wuss.

I hid a thread recently that had turned into a bun fight.

Don't think I'd hide an entire topic though.
