Vulgar, Vile, Crass

Yes, I use them all. Not so much vile, but vulgar and crass I use quite a lot.

Vile is becoming totally over-used on MN though, and it's often said with a slightly hysterical and professionally offended air about it.

I often use Vile to describe something I may have cooked, or something I've eaten in a restaurant. Crass, in my head, when worrying what to say to someone who has been recently bereaved (eg, I want to say something nice, but does it sound crass?)

Vulgar, yes, to describe DD's ex BF, who we didn't like and he really was.

I use them all and I'm dead common so it probably sounds really pretentious.

Trouble is I've got a good vocabulary, read a lot from a very early age, love words and in my head - you know when you think to yourself? - I sound very posh. My internal voice sounds like the Queen.

I either need to use fewer long/posh words or get elocution lessons.

Vile yes (I used it recently in the worst thing ever cooked thread). Also use it when thinking/talking about Ricky Gervais.

'Crass generalisation' is one of my favourite phrases. Agree with Evans vile is useful for describing foodstuffs. Don't tend to use vulgar.

My mother used Crass a lot. I use Vile to mean slightly different things. I tell DC not to be vulgar when they burp/swear/pick nose.

I say ghastly more often than vile...vulgar very rarely and crass very occasionally.

My DD says ghastly in the most marvellous accent (but then I've been told that I sound like Penelope Keith so it's not surprising she does a bit too!)
