To be shocked and disgusted at how difficult it is to find cruelty free make up in 2015.

I grew up in the 90's. In a time where supermodels proudly claimed that they would 'rather go naked than wear fur' and there was a big social drive to ensure that people chose cruelty free make up brands. So many big brands advertised how they had 'made the switch' and wouldn't use animals in the testing of cosmetics. I became very naive; cruelty free was the done thing so I stopped checking. I assumed that, in 2015, no brand would test on animals any more. Then I saw a news article about how some companies had resumed testing on animals to sell their products in China. It was the brand of make up that I use so I decided to switch. However, there are hardly any brands I recognise that are cruelty free. Previously, I used MAC, Estee Lauder, Clarins and Clinique. I will not use these until they stop testing on animals but I'm struggling to find a replacement. It pisses me right off that so many companies are testing on animals once again. AIBU to think that in 2015 this shouldn't happen? Can anyone point me in the direction of a shop that sells cruelty free products?

I'm allergic to lush but have found Liz Earle for skin care. Liz Earle make up isn't very good though. Any idea who stocks Beauty Without Cruelty or is it an online thing?

There is a blog called Beauty and the Freak which lists cruelty free brands.

I do agee with you - I think a lot of people understood that testing of cosmetics on animals had been banned by the EU - which it has - but are unaware that companies have resumed it to sell in China. There are a couple of brands that I used a lot (Estee Lauder and L'Occitane) which I'm now boycotting.

And they're bloody sneaky about it too. Be wary of claims of a cruelty free 'product'. This does NOT mean that the individual ingredients haven't been tested on animals, just the end result....

The companies (including body shop) can test individual ingredients on animals but not the finished product and therefore can technically claim to be cruelty free.

Sadly, the drive for stopping animal testing has to come from the Chinese consumers. Until they are prepared to question it, nothing will change. It's too big market to expect any multinational cosmetics company to ignore.

There is an app, I can't remember the name where it lists all cruelty free make up and you can scan your make up to double check :)

I had the same problem OP as I used to use Clinique. I now use a mix of Lush and Urban Decay. I'm now a bit worried about PPs saying that ingredients can be tested on animals- does anyone know if UD do this? I don't know what I'd do without them!

Easiest way to find is to search 'vegan' cosmetics as you'll be certain they're okay for use.

What to do about parent companies? Urban decay may say they're cruelty free but were sold to L'oreal couple of years ago.

If you go onto Cruelty Free International, they have lists of all companies whose products are not tested in animals. Both household and cosmetic products are included.
OP, there are many who claim to be cruelty free, but if they're not approved on this website then they usually aren't. Make up by the following are cruelty free - M&S, Superdrugs own brand, Urban Decay, Sainsbury's, Lily Lolo and Beauty Without Cruelty.
I agree that it's a disgrace how many still carry out animal testing!

Body Shop (although now owned by L'Oreal) is cruelty free - including its ingredients - see here. I get my cosmetics from them.
