Colleague's STOMACH!

I am sat here, a mere 6 or so feet away from my colleague and all I hear ALL DAY LONG is their stomach rumbling and gurgling!

Said colleague is for want of a more pleasant word, large, but eats less than I do. Yet all I hear all day is the rumblings and gurglings of their stomach and it makes me feel sick! I actually shudder when I hear it

I know someone who puts off going to the loo, their stomach does that.

Well if you're fed up I would imagine that person is more than fed up and embarrassed.

I imagine your reaction is making them uncomfortable as well.

Yes. Mine can behave similarly because I can suffer from IBS (and I am 5.8, 10 stone and a size 10, so weight has nothing to do with it ).

I know someone with ulcerative colitis who also has a growling gut and there is nothing she can do about it. It causes her a huge amount of embarrassment and not inconsiderable pain.

have you got supersensitive ears or something? because in the normal course of events I wouldn't hear someone elses guts rumbling , unless I was hugging them or in bed or something.

maybe there is a medical issue, like IBS, coeilac etc, and maybe she is embarrassed about it too.

^this is not very nice. Its as if you have decided the noise is down to her size, and she is therefore at fault rather than deserving of any understanding

I do feel mean having this reaction but I've heard it constantly for the last few weeks. The sound is making me feel nauseus! So OTT I know It must be embarrassing for colleague but argh! We have a radio on and I can still hear it. Earphones not a possibility as is looking for another job!

No, not sensitive ears... This is quite loud. I am part deaf in one ear. So can imagine it IS quite loud to those with full hearing!

I don't know if YABU, but you need to get to a GP for a spot of CBT or similar to help you overcome your OTT reaction to something that is perfectly normal.

I presume you mention their size and how much they eat as you think their stomach is rumbling because they're hungry.

Really, what can you do? You're just going to have to put up with it.

SirChenjin Didnt used to bother me but when it became a soundtrack to my day, it just makes me feel sick!

I dont know why I mention their size - not "their - so I am not denoting male or female. I am worried, concerned, i dont know, in that they are larger and yet eat hardly anything. Yet every conversation is about food? If they are hungry, just eat!

Presumably they are concerned about their weight and have decided that massively limiting their calorie intake is the way to do it.

Its like some people hate the sound of someone slurping a drink, or nails down a blackboard.... The sound of a rumbling tummy just makes me feel sick.

I am fat and feel like I don't have the right to eat.
I avoid eating in front of people. I feel ashamed to.
Like people dont know i eat!!! theres no sense to it! It's all very complicated.

I work in an office too - I wear headphones and listen to the radio via my PC. If you've already got the radio on then presumably it's not an office with lots of people calling in by phone or in person? Or you could wear an ear plug in your good ear, but you'll still have residual sound in the other?

Or as I said - a spot of CBT.

Perhaps. They know they can eat in frotn of me. Im always nibbling something or other. And drink GALLONS of tea (always offering them one too which they usually decline) Fenenlla

Can you move desks? Can you put earplugs in? I don't think it U to be distracted by the sound, no one can help this, but you cannot raise it with the colleague I'm afraid.

So - could you wear an sponge earplug in your good ear? That would block out most of the noise but you'd still have the residual hearing in your 'bad' ear in case you needed to hear the fire alarm, phone, etc.
