My pettiness!

I like a certain red wine. I don't drink often or much and when I do, I really like to have one or two glasses of this to enjoy. It is between £9 and £11 a bottle which is more than I would spend, so when it is on offer for a fiver a bottle I snap up half a dozen.

DH drinks any old shite so when shopping, he buys the cheapest plonk he can find.

All fine and dandy.

EXCEPT...

When I go into the cupboard thinking that there were a couple of bottles left to find that he has drunk all my wine and there is nothing there for me to have on the occasion I fancy it!

His solution? Buy another bottle of the nice wine. But now it is £11 in the local shop and I don't want to spend that! I just want wine waiting in the cupboard for me when I bought it specially. DH reckons as finances are shared, wine is also shared.

AIBU to think I should keep my wine in a locked cupboard from now on and tell him to buy 300 bottles of Tesco value wine for his own consumption so he will never again be caught short and drink mine?

I appreciate this is petty and first world but by god it winds me up

Oh DH does this with my chocolate. He then tries to offer me his crap buys. If I wanted that I would have put it in the basket. I picked the one I did coz its much nicer.

I agree with PP- hiding place. Luckily DP doesn't drink wine but I hide chocolate from him.

No, should have been more specific in my OP, he is not an alcoholic! I thought there were a couple of bottles left but I hadn't looked for ages as I don't often drink. He has a glass sometimes of an evening or a few at the weekend, so still not loads but more than me!

and I say petty because if he bought nice chocolate I would probably eat it despite claiming to be on a diet

YANBU - it's totall reasonable to expect to have your wine waiting when you want it without wasting money. Have similar with my DH. Have had to ban mine from my special wine, chocs and whisky.

Well, if you snap it up at a great bargain price, add in a few bottles for your DH and hide a few just for you.

I buy all the wine for our house. We generally share a bottle between us. But I hide the nice stuff for special occasions. I have about 6 lovely bottles at the bottom of our wardrobe at the moment.

YANBU. You may not want it often but when you do, you want it! The only solution is to hide it. Otherwise, he (totally reasonably, arguably) hoovers up whatever is available, quite indiscriminately, while you get left with the (metaphorical) minging chocolate footballs from the pound shop when you really want the liqueur truffles.

I use a site that sends me alerts when the wine I like is on offer. That way I only buy it when it is cheap (£6-7 rather than £10-£11).

Or just find another place for it & make it clear that the plonk is in location A.

Dh doesn't drink at all, but often has bandmates round for rehearsal who appreciate a bottle glass of wine. It's been agreed between us that the big wine rack on the left is for random/party plonk to which anyone can help themselves, & the smaller one on the right is for bargain 'naice' bottles I'm looking forward to, so if it DOES get drunk I shall be mildly pissed off & expect an equivalent replacement.

I also have a couple of bottles in my study that I'm hanging on to for sentimental reasons & which are completely off-limits (in fact, dh wouldn't dream of touching them - mostly they are there so I don't drunkenly open them by mistake !)

Obviously this assumes he's just absent-mindedly opening the nearest bottle & would respect 'your' wine if it was clearly indicated as such. If this is not the case, he's being a prize knobber & I'd be hugely tempted to save an empty bottle, & fill it with red ink & wee.
