AIBU?

You do not make guacamole by wizzing into a wall paper paste

Had lunch round a friends earlier. Was nice apart from the guac. She had obviously put it all in a blender and wizzed it to death and it came out like a thick paste. I ate it through gritted teeth pretending to say 'mmmm lovley', when it wasn't.

Seriously aibu to think to need to mash it or just not bother?

Why yes, yes you are. A snob, that is. Just to clarify.

It could be worse. She could have served that ready made Old El Paso stuff that's 3% avocado Hmm.

This will not end well OP, I remember the last thread where someone criticised her friends home catering.

Surely it tastes the same

I hate avacado so all guac is yuk (totally pointless post from me there).

Fudgeface123 · 11/12/2014 16:13

It is supposed to be chunky I think but maybe your friend prefers it this way and as a previous poster says, it still tastes the same no?

Suck it up

I read your title as "peeing into some wallpaper paste will not make it magically turn into guacamole" Grin

You'll get slammed for criticising a friend's lunch.

But you're still right. Guacamole should be roughly mashed with a fork, not puréed.

FarelyKnuts · 11/12/2014 16:22

I did the same as Scarlett and thought well no clearly not Smile

But yes OP, guacamole should be mashed, you didn't actually say that to your friend however, you made appreciative noises and no one died. All is ok

YANBU to hate sloppy guac. I hate it myself.

The Al Paso stuff looks gross. I don't eat dairy and despair at the fact that I can't seem to find a guac in the shops that hasn't got cream in it. Guacamole doesn't need cream ffs.

I'd have probably said something to her along the lines of 'Guac shouldn't be blended it should be chunky! But it tastes nice' etc etc..

CupidStuntSurvivor · 11/12/2014 16:25

Well, your friend obviously prefers it. I wouldn't. Sounds gross. Not as gross as that stuff in the squeezy bottle that's 95% mayo and preservatives though. Half the pleasure of guac is the texture (says someone who's allergic to literally every ingredient in it but still makes and eats it at least weekly.)

Oh! I whizz mine with a hand blender. It also contains garlic, tomato, fresh coriander etc and when I blend it it comes out well mixed but still a bit lumpy. Everyone who has ever had it has (apparently) loved it and scraped the bowl clean.

Now I know they probably all went home and started MN threads about my shitey cooking :(

But when you get it from a shop it's kind of smooth too. Can't see the problem meself.

(An not OP's friend though, to be clear. I know I can't be as I didn't make guacamole today...)

Joolsy · 11/12/2014 16:33

I'd still love it even if it was smooth. They serve it like that in a couple of restaurants I've been in, with nachos

To be fair, once it has been zubbed it does have a really weird mouth feel!

But, yes, UABU, she may never have made it before and you could have had a lovely time swapping recipes for it and similar, rather than lying to her!4

How do you learn unless people you like/trust talk to you about such stuff?

Report
CoolStoryBro · 11/12/2014 16:37

I use the same recipe my fave Mexican restaurant uses as they make it right in front of you and it's yummmm! So, I use a pestle and mortar. I'm dead posh, me Wink

Tbh, guac is food of the Gods so I'd like it any old way!

SuburbanReindeer · 11/12/2014 16:40

How do you pretend to say "mmmm, lovely", OP?

Report
19lottie82 · 11/12/2014 16:48

YABU some people prefer it smooth, others chunky. There is no right or wrong way.

Report
TinklyLittleLaugh · 11/12/2014 16:55

People try to make it like that slop you buy in tubs though don't they? I like the avocado chunky, but the rest chopped quite finely.

DoJo · 11/12/2014 17:01

^^ This - she clearly prefers it that way - no need for patronising comments about how it 'should' be or telling her that she needs to mash it (good grief - are there really people so socially unaware that they would do this?) when it's perfectly legitimate to make it however the hell you like it.

Thank you Luis, that was the thread I was thinking of. I think it got deleted in the end....

my magimix has a recipe book with guac in it and it says to blend for 2 minutes! Shock in fairness I blend it all up and then add chunks of avocado and sprinkle coriander on the top.

Report
Soamiasnob · 11/12/2014 17:42

Wow, many people are acting as if I threw the guac in the bitches face! I'm just saying it wasn't good on a forum she doesn't read.

I cant understand why someone would want to make something taste as if it came from a factory? If my home made pasta sauce tasted like dolmio I would be very upset tbh
