I always thought the tree should go up 12 days before xmas. Not as soon as its december (or even end of nov in some cases I have seen)

Aibu or just bah humbug to not want the bloody thing up yet!?! I do like christmas but not for the best part of a month!

Ours went up on the 1st! Depends whether you have DC or not. I wanted it up to make it feel Christmassy for Advent Calendar opening. It will be down by the 28th though.

Doesn't matter really, whatever floats your boat.

If you are being properly traditional, it should go up on Christmas Eve and come down on Twelfth Night, but I don't know anyone who does that.

So YABU for objecting to people putting up their trees before your randomly selected date.

Up xmas eve and down at twelfth night. I don't know where this taking it down on Boxing Day comes from or putting up on the first.

Mine goes up the weekend the dc break up from school until 12th night.
I'd love to leave it until Christmas eve but ex would never let me and now that's he's gone the dc have got used to it being up before then.

Each to their own I guess.

Definitely up Christmas Eve. What else to do that day? (Plus cannot bear how much smaller the room feels with all that gubbins).

The 12 days of Christmas refer to the days between Christmas Day and the Feast of the Epiphany on January 6 (Twelfth Night). Traditionally, therefore your tree would not go up until Christmas Eve. I stretch this a bit and we will put ours up when the children break up from school on the 19th. Not before that and never, never in November. What's the point? You are already bored by it by the time Christmas actually arrives.

If you are following tradition, then up on Christmas Eve and down on Twelfth Night.

Mine goes up after DS's birthday, so usually around the 10th to the 15th. The house is full of cards, birthday banners and balloons, I don't have room for Christmas decs too!
The tree will be going up this weekend, and we will be getting in to the Christmas spirit with a trip to see the Coca cola truck that day too.
I would be sick of the sight of it by Christmas day if we put it up on Advent Sunday.

I always did 12 days before and 12 days after but this year I put it up on the 1st, no reason really other than I like the lights and love sitting in the dark with just the tree on. still a big kid

The twelve days of Christmas come after Christmas, so your arbitrary 12 is erroneous.
We celebrate Christmas before 25th these days instead of after.

We put our tree up the weekend before Christmas, and take it down the day before I go back to work.

We normally put the tree up 2 weeks before, but for a variety if reasons we have broken with tradition. Usually the presents go under the tree as soon as they are wrapped but this year they are only going to go under on Christmas eve.

What's the point of merging a traditional Christmas with a modern day one? Old traditions mixing in with our new style commercial xmas. Put it up when you want and take it down when you want! There is no 'supposed' about it anymore! It's 2014 and retailmas....

What amuses me is the people who rush to put it up as early as possible, and are then fed up by Christmas and have it down before New Year before the festive season has ended.

No ritual here. Some convenient point in December, usually around halfway through, and somewhere around the 12th night, possibly slightly earlier if the weekend is something like the 4th.

26Point2Miles · 09/12/2014 19:28

Why the 12th night if you only follow half of the traditions?

I start removing decs on boxing day. Xmas is over and life resumes....

Is it ever acceptable to celebrate Christmas? I get irritated enough with the "BUT IT'S NOVEMBER, why are you already thinking about Christmas??" but it continues into December as well! I think some people wouldn't be happy unless everyone was rushing around like loonatics on Christmas Eve doing their entire shopping lists AND putting the decorations up, maybe picking the tree too?

Bah humbug. It's december therefore it's acceptable to have any decorations you want up and eat as many mince pies as you want and drink as much mulled wine as you want. Wait until January, then you can start whinging that people haven't taken them down quickly enough.
