AIBU?

To be irritated by hairdresser asking 'how much do you want cut off'?

The hairdressers at the place I take my 10 year old DS always seem to want numbers when they ask this question. My DS has a shaggy mop of wavy hair that sticks out in all sorts of absurd directions when badly cut which is most of the time and it doesn't end up the same length dry as it was when it was sprayed wet. I can't deal with whether it should be two inches or 5 cm or 27.27592 mm or whatever. I just want it (a) long enough to keep the wave and (b) short enough to be tidied up a bit. But when I say this they look at me with a bovine stare that tells me they really don't know what I mean. They're supposed to be the hairdressers. I don't do hair. Ever. I'm hopeless at it.

I suppose I am being unreasonable. This is what you get for keeping the price down to under £10 a cut. But would a slightly better service at a slightly worse price be too much to ask?

Of course it's a different length dry/wet. Everyone's is.

Yanbu

They're scared you'll sue them if it's wrong though.

Yabu, your version of short / long may mean something totally different.

YABU

They're not mind readers.

YABU

Pay more for the haircut if you think it would be better and you would get a better service.................tbh though I think it's you that's the problem not the hairdresser.

YABU

How on earth are they supposed to know how long/short you want it, unless you are both experts in telepathy (which is unlikely)?

YABU - just tell them what you want and get on with it. In a couple of years your DS will be telling them himself. Oh to have a £10 haircut!

I suppose they could consult their crystal ball rather than asking you Hmm

I'm not surprised they look askance at you! It's quite a normal and simple question.

My 10 year old DS just has a number 7 all over. Nice and simple!

What's a number 7? Sorry to be so naive.

It's not an unreasonable thing to ask. YABU.

Go somewhere else if you don't like it.

My DS Googles a pic of how he'd like his hair and then saves it to his phone.

The barber is always grateful because an image in one person's mind, can be completely different in another person's....even after they've tried to explain it.

'I don't do hair'

You don't 'do manners' either by the sound of it.

I don't think this is unreasonable, especially when having a trim, I think 'as much as necessary but as little as possible' should cover it for tidying up split ends and making it even.

(however in practice this did once mean that my hair was trimmed from bum-length to bra strap-length as the hairdresser 'thought it was a better length' for me. I was quite Shock and am always a bit more precise now...!)

My son has a 2 on the sides and back and 3 on the top. :)

OP, I think when the ask you how much you want off, they mean when the hair is dry. Just show them with your fingers. If his hair is curly or wavy, it might be worth it to find a stylist who specializes in curly hair. You can probably find one at //www.naturallycurly.com

If that's what you say to him/her, ie long enough to keep wave etc - then no, yanbu.

However if you say it more like 'oh, I don't know, just a bit of a tidy up' then yabu. They're not mindreaders and friends of mine with ds' with longer hair are fucking anal quite fussy about how they want it. Too much off and its the end of theworld....iyswim!!

YABU. Vague ideas about the wave and weight are no good.

It's like telling a tree surgeon you want a tree tidying up but that you don't want to lose the nice bend in it when the wind blows. It has to be a bit more precise when you're chopping someone else's stuff.

My ds has really tricky hair, cow lick at front and weird hair line at back so he can't have it short at the front (ie clippers) or it looks wonky unless they cut it unevenly. So he has it longer now, sorts out problem at front but longer doesn't suit his hairline at the back, my hairdresser is currently experimenting with it to try and find a solution! I found when my kids were younger that a lot of salons get junior/trainee stylists to do kids hair and they had a lot of dodgy cuts as a result. So now they have more expensive cuts (25 quid) but they look so much better, it also is sensible to have the same hairdresser each time so they get used to you, your kids and their hair. This would also help your issues with knowing what you want Smile

Just to clarify that I was never brusque or rude at any stage - I stayed polite, and gave a tip at the end but may have come across a bit vague or waffly. I just would rather have had a picture to point at, you know?

Search the tinterweb OP and find a picture so that next time you can show them the cut you would like. Smile

Sorry - number 7 is with the clippers and just refers to the length - in this case just under an inch. Probably too short for your needs.
