AIBU?

To be hesitant in posting a video of my daughter dancing wearing only knikcers on FB?

I made this really cool video today when my nearly 6 year old was pretending to be a rock singer using a kid's broom as microphone. I'm not usually PFB but the video is good. Problem is, she is wearing only her knickers and I'm not sure if it is inappropriate to share with my friends and family on FB (majority of them are abroad). I have high security settings and only real/close people added...what do you think?

Do you really need to ask?! It's a terrible idea.

Although I was not aware that you could personalise youtube so only certain people could see what you uploaded. Why don't you just have a private group on facebook and post it there?

OK scrap that first reply - I've just woken up and thought you wanted to put it on youtube!

As I said you can open a private group page on FB

I wouldn't. I'm not paranoid about sharing pics / videos of kids on Facebook, but I think that beyond infancy they should really be fully clothed in any pictures that are shared. Just out of respect for the fact that they are not making the choice to put themselves out there.

I live far away from family too, so I understand the temptation to share a cute moment with loved ones. But in this case I wouldn't.

No I wouldnt as things can be easily copied etc and I would be worried about copyright of the video. I read somewhere that fb owns the copyright to all pics and videos posted on it. I am not sure how accurate it is but do look into it.
Also your dc might not thank you for posting a video of her singing in her knickers!

Yep once you post pics/videos on FB the ownership passes to them so I wouldn't.

I would make another video with her in clothing doing her "act".

Once you put it online it is there for good.

How will dd feel at high school, her wedding, first boyfriend etc etc if that appears.

I think whether it is friends of not, anything you put on the internet can never be deleted, not completely.

I would post it, I don't see anything rude about a child's naked skin, would you post a photo of a boy in swimming trunks at the beach?

As for the possibility of it turning up on her wedding day/first boyfriend if her life is so lovely that the most worrysom issue in it is a video of her dancing in her knickers then you have done a very good job!

I wouldn't. If you have to ask whether it would be ok, I reckon it probably isn't!

Would your dd be pleased you posted her dancing in her pants when she is 13, 16, 21?

Can you not just email it to your family?

I do not trust FaceBook and having a photo or video as "private" is no guarantee that it can't be accessed by the wrong people. I would never add a photo or video of any person that is not me in there. If you want to take a risk, at least do it with yourself.

maddening · 15/04/2013 07:12

also can those who it is shared with forward the video on themselves?

I wouldn't. I'm gobsmacked by how many FB users post pics of their children naked, in nappies, in their first knickers/pants etc.

It's not from a hysterical paedophile-fear, just from a basic common sense that what's sweet and endearing to you as a family should stay that way and not be shared on the WORLD WIDE web (I don't trust any social media sites to really maintain privacy).

Send the video to your family by email. This isn't for a wide audience.

No, don't do it. It's there forever. What if she wants to be Prime Minister?

I would, but I don't think a 6yr old in her underwear is sexual, and we have stacks of old videos from my childhood in that (and less). At times they were slightly cringy to see, but never mortifying etc.

I would share with family & friends and perhaps ask them not to "share" it with their friends, but other than that I'd not give it a second thought. we have family overseas and although skype is amazing at keeping in touch with how kids look, speak etc, they often get cross stopping what they are doing and stand at the computer to talk - my family loves to see things they can't see from afar.

If you're still worried, try to refilm in an outfit with backing music to see if she'll do a better performance - but if not, personally I would post it on facebook under a friends setting.

Christ, it's a video of a kid dancing in her pants. Put it on there as long as your security settings as high. Jesus, as if a video of someone as a child would affect their future career? Get a fucking grip.

I don't think I would but I would be more concerned about your dd being embarrassed in the future than anything nasty happening. When I was in my mid to late teens I felt really embarrassed by a photo of me and that was in a family photo album that was kept in the house.

Molehillmountain · 15/04/2013 08:24

Just a thought-could you not just email it to the people who'd like to see it. Facebook worries me more because they can have some rights over your photos. We always email to my parents and I laws because they're not on Facebook.

as long as you are happy with fb having the right to use your video if they want to which is highly unlikely

I would email it

If it's too big to e-mail, then you can use Dropbox or similar to give people access without making it public.

I would have done until I heard about that awful child abuse video which went around facebook the other day for ages before it was deleted. Really opened my eyes as apparently it's not the first time facebook has been used to share images like that :( in the light of that, no, I wouldn't share it on facebook even if the privacy settings were high. I would email it instead or do it as a private video on youtube where you have to have the URL to view.

It wouldn't bother me but each to their own. Six is older than a baby / toddler though. How would she feel? I suppose at 6 she is maybe old enough to have a view?

don't be so selfish. your dd is a separate person to you, once online it is there forever. post a video of yourself dancing in your knickers but not your DD FGS!
