To put DC, aged 8 and 9, in Economy while I fly in Club with a 2yo and the nanny

OK, so it wasn't actually me. But I boarded a flight from the USA yesterday and was shocked that this Mom did this to her own children. I have heard that people do this. Is there ever any real justification? My DH was sitting next to them and the little girl was getting quite scared at the turbulence. The Mom said that she would send the nanny down and swap places with DD during the flight, but she never did. I could never do this - I want my precious ones near me during a flight, especially an 8 hour one!

As soon as kids are old enough (and I think 8 and 9 is too young not to be a nuisance to other passengers) this is precisely how I will do long haul flights.

My sister regularly used to fly business class with her 4 charges while mum and dad flew first class! (oh how the other half live....)But no i would never leave my children without myself or my dh on an 8 hr flight.

Yeah, I was thinking that too about the nanny stella and it was our business hermione as my DC was sitting right next to them and the Mom told her kids that we were "a cute family" and that they weren't to annoy us.

I think that is awful. I would have thought the nanny could have sat with the 2 older dc and she could have been in business with the baby, but I suppose she wanted the comfort of having the nanny on hand to take the baby off her.

There should have been a nanny - if there was an incident requiring face masks they would have needed help - and if heaven forbid the plane went down they would have been alone. Bit dramatic I know.

Also - what if they got a bit giddy - someone needs to make sure they behave.

I guess technically it's up to the mother but really totally mean and selfish of her. Youngest gets to sit with Mum and nanny while the eldest gets shoved in economy with strangers....heartless, mean, selfish and surely they'll have feelings of jealousy & kinda abandonment - 8 hours is a long time

And the 8-9 year olds might have felt all grown up travelling on their own. Or mum could have been preparing them for independent travel (e.g., if they were going to go to a boarding school abroad in the near future)

I know. Do you remember that Air France crash with that poor little 11yo English boy on board? He was travelling back to school with a paid chaperone whilst his family stayed in South America? There was quite a bit of turbulence during our landing and my own 14yoDD grabbed my hand - she who is too cool for any emotion whatsoever.
