AIBU?

to think that if you find a hair in a friends cake, it is poor form to say so

and in front of people too!

I made a cake for a friends party, just a quick one to take along and I was chatting to my friends dad who was saying how much he loves it when people make cakes as its nicer than a tesco's one. Queue inappropriate mutual friend with a hair in his hand "Well, I found a hair in mine!" and brandishing it like a winning lottery ticket. What did he want me to do? If I were a shop I would have given him a refund but I am just a guest who thought it would be nice to take something homemade along. Having thought on it, I don't think I would say. Its like dumping on someone who has only tried to do something nice. AIBU?

Do note: I have long hair, I tie it back and wear a scarf when Im cooking but it still got in there.

I agree, very poor form. II think Come Dine With Me has a lot to answer for here.

Very poor form indeed. Pity he didn't choke on it.

Lol my hair gets everywhere, it's a standing joke in our house.

My DS found one in his lunch box and said it was like having a little piece of home Grin

But YANBU, the guy shouldn't have embarrassed you in front of everyone.

Cue not queue. Wink

I think he was being rude. Unless it would be obvious that he wasn't eating his and people were wondering why. Someone else's hair my food would stop me in my tracks and make me feel sick but I would not make a big deal out if it and would keep quiet.

It was lovely of you to bake for them. Smile

My hair is always falling out so that's why I wear a scarf.

The ideal scenario in my head is that I say Oh no, Im so sorry while taking his plate from his hand to inspect... and then ramming it into his face!!! My lemon cake has been replaced with a custard pie for the purposes of this scenario.

YANBU. I hate this sort of moaning about food cooked by others. Whatever happened to politeness? I like your reply Clipped.

I have a particularly open-mouthed neighbour. We eat around theirs a bit and the food is often far from nice....but we eat it and say how nice it is. When he comes to ours he says things like 'i can't eat that' etc. He won't even drink our tea because we don't make it to his liking. Seriously, he brought a flask once. One time he was deperate for a cuppa, and not having brought the flask, accepted one of mine. There was no milk left so I made it up from baby powder milk! He quite liked it that time of course [hhmm]....

two minds on this

You can't expect random body parts to turn up in a cake and the people who are ment to eat it not comment on the fact

I have long hair too, however the fact that you have long hair (which is easier too spot than short hair) how did you not notice it your cake mixture before you put it in the oven?

if someone made me a cake and there was hair baked into I'd want to vomit

I'd of said, 'that's no hair, that's a pube, woooopsey!' See how gobby he is then....

Well, maybe. Definately in my head I would of!

What a rude man!

I find hair in food really yucky but it happens and it doesn't actually matter. I often bake for friends and I bet I have served up a few free extra additives Wink

I didnt spot it Kelper. If I had I would have taken it out obvs. If a comment must be made, wouldn't a quiet word in my ear about the shittiness of his free cake would be the way to go?

hair in food makes me totally boak. But, I certainly wouldn't mention it if someone had been lovely enough. to bake a cake for a birthday.

Vomit because of a hair? I'm shocked at the strength of that reaction. Just think about how many skin cells you've shed into the mix. Loads and loads and loads of them, all the time. Let alone if you've kneaded anything.

Actually, better not or you'll never eat again.

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't hurt you, just take it out and discretely get rid of. I wouldn't have noticed in a cake mix (because my magimix would have chopped it up nice and small and you would have eaten it mwah ha ha)

Kalisi · 26/10/2012 13:16

I would discreetly remove the hair and make an excuse if I did not want to eat it (toothache, too full etc.) and expect others to do the same. Can't stand people like that, I had a friend once who thought a Birthday present I bought was rubbish and told me so. When I was visibly hurt by this his reaction was " well sorry what did you want me to do, Lie?!" YES you fucking moron that's exactly what you're supposed to do. Hmm

Honestly, I don't care at all about hairs etc. Their hairs are probably cleaner than mine, so who cares! plus you've baked the bloody thing so it'll be practically germ free.

After the ash cloud we had to check into a hotel v. quickly and we ended up in one where the bathroom was covered in bright purple hairs!

Agree, what's the point of mentioning it - as a friend you obviously didn't place it there deliberately in the hope it would choke him and/or make him feel sick or whatever. Frankly, if I found hair in food a friend had made I wouldn't really think much of it .... and the possibility of any germs lingering after it had been blasted at 190C is pretty remote. Definitely think it's a bit rude and ungrateful to complain.

Admit if it was restaurant food I'd feel a bit more squeamish - simply because I wouldn't know the person whose head it had dropped from! I'd say something then but only in the hope of getting a discount or a free drink.

In our house I'm afraid there's more likelihood of cat hair in dishes as it gets everywhere

Yanbu

Invited my mum and dad over along with my sister and her kids for a mothers day/my mums birthday roast dinner last year.

Was heavily pregnant with dc4 had barely slept and had made a massive effort to make it nice for my mum.
Spent all morning cooking and cleaning on my own with the kids literally under my feet..

Mum found one of my hairs in her dinner and did not stop going on about it.

Had to leave the room before I became violent with the carving fork Grin

I had a friend like this, she had no connection between her brain and her mouth.

My chocolate cake was "too rich" for her
My spaghettig bolognaise "upset" her stomach

One of many reasons why she is no longer a friend

A hair would put me off but that doesnt excuse being rude when someone has cooked something for you.

It just shows you that some people just don't care about pissing on other peoples chips. I would never turn my nose up at something someone had made an effort with - especially as he turned up with nothing and would never make or even BUY a cake to take along himself!
