dd had a problem with her ankle joint, they cause her alot of pain. she is under the hospital for physio and has specialy made shoe inserts to correct the way her foot sits in her shoe. she also has very flat feet and instep.

buy the come to calf height.
she wore them with trousers, so you couldnt see that they were boots until she was getting changed for pe.
i got a call from the school saying i had to take her another pair of shoes as these were not suitable for school. i said no, i was at work.
now when we go to the hospital for fittings, we take all her shoes, so we know that the inserts wont rub, fit well and do their job. wellies are crap on her, they dont support her foot or ankle at all. and so when it rains so she needs to wear boots, she cant just take the inserts out and put them in her new shoes very easily, they are tight to get in and hurt if not put in really well).
I've told the school that if its raining or cold she will be wearing her boots. they say if she is wearing boots they will make her stay in at break as a punishment for not wearing correct uniform.

school uniform is just that
She can wear her boots to walk to school then change into her shoes, her shoes will give her more support than those anyway.

thing is i can understand if the boots had heels, or chains, or were pink. but they are as plain black as i can find.

maddy, she cant, she has one pair or inserts, have to be worn 80% of the time, and she cant fit them in properly herself. if she walks to school without them she is in pain before she gets there and if she goes without them all day she is not hitting 80% of the time and is in pain when she comes home.

Before people leap in and tell you to contact the LA or Ofsted...
Get a copy of the school complaints procedure.
Make an appointment to see the Head to discuss this, that might be all you need to do.
If the HT doesn't sort this out to your satisfaction, tell them that you consider the first stage of the complaint procedure to be completed and you will now take it to the next stage by writing to the governing body.
Put the complaint in writing and ask for a panel of governors to hear the complaint (providing this fits with their procedure, but it most likely will).
Where there is a medical issue the school simply can't enforce this, so I have every hope that it won't go any further than you speaking to the Head.

If it is medical and not ridiculous (ie, you aren't insisting she wears pink crocs every day...) they should cave. I would speak to someone else at the school as the person you spoke to has 'made a mistake'.

As long as school are fully appraised of the reasons then they are being unreasonable. Maybe you need to go and talk to them.

When she has had hospital appointments have they been followed with a letter to your GP with a copy to you (or the other way around) discussing what happened at the appointment? If so then could you photocopy that letter for the school so show that she needs to wear her orthoses within suitable footwear.

You are absolutely right to send dd in her boots and actually the school can't stop her. However, I'd get a doctor or physio to write a note and get a proper meeting with the school to have a chance to discuss this. The school won't necessarily have taken it all on board and before you complain, give them the best chance you can to behave reasonably. Some parents do send their children in in inappropriate footwear and that's why they take a hard line.

Dd is the same, we found her boots and school agreed to them. She wears them under trousers too. So I'd say your school IBU

old gold, i havent got a letter, but will call the Dr to see if they can let me have one.
she got a new pair 2 weeks ago. is going to be fr fitted in another 4 weeeks, and it then takes 6 weeks from the moulds to get made into in inserts. so she wont have another pair for atleast 10 weeks.

Can't she take her normal school shoes in a bag and change into them when she arrives? I understand the need to keep her feet dry on the walk to school, but presumably those wearing wellies for the walk change into their school shoes once they arrive, so why can't your DD do the same?

How old is she?

If she's of an age when she's still being accompanied to school, can you change inserts on arrival?

If she's primary but walking in own, can you show staff how to change inserts and would they do this?

If she's in secondary school, could you spend some time showing her how to fit them correctly?
