AIBU?

to feel mad that PIL gave 2 year old dd a McD's?

It was my sister's wedding this weekend and our dd's just turned 2. PIL came to the night do for a little while then took dd home to theirs when she got knackered. When we picked her up the next morning we were quite surprised she'd not gone to sleep until after 10pm (they left by half 8) and then was up at 5:30am! (She usually has 12 hours whatever; it must be over a year since she's woken before 7am; lucky us, we know). However we put this down to excitement of the day, winding down etc. Then we saw them today for a bbq when they announced they'd given her 3 pieces of (brandy-filled) wedding cake when they got there and then she'd had a full McDonald's on the way home. They thought it was funny as they never thought she'd eat a whole one! Don't get me wrong she has treats etc, but I really thought this was pretty selfish - I know they'd not seen much of her that day and such but surely home for bottle of milk before bed would've been on the cards? I know it won't have done her any harm in the long run etc but I feel livid. Like I say of course she has treats but we've never taken her to McDonalds and if we did it wouldn't be a full adult meal she'd be getting! AIBU?

Oh get a grip. Lucky you for having a nice time while they looked after her while you stayed at the party.

Think you are being a bit unreasonable oand definitely overreacting to be livid about it.

It was very much a one off. She won't come to any harm from it. Yes, a full meal is not ideal, salty mcDonalds not ideal, late night not ideal. early morning not ideal. And if it was regular it would be worth making an issue out of.

But, as you say yourself, it was a one off.

YANBU about the McDonald's; I'd be hopping mad in your position. My two (4.6yrs and 2.10yrs) have had McDonald's only once when they were invited to a birthday party there and I resented every mouthful of crappy nuggets and fries that they gleefully ingested.

Do your PIL know how you feel about McDonald's? Do they eat there regularly themselves? Part of the problem is how much latitude you give grandparents to do their own thing with your DD, and how much you expect them to follow your rules. On something like McDonald's, though, I'd expect them not to even think of taking your DD there if you wouldn't.

When I read your title I initially thought 'don't sweat the small stuff, she'll survive' BUT having read the context I do agree it was unnecessary to do it that late at night when she did not even need a meal and to buy her an adult portion!

I totally get the grandparents treating the grandkids thing but that is taking it too far, I would have been annoyed

You are over reacting - grandparents get the fun easy stuff like feeding them junk and letting them watch telly til midnight. You get broccolli wars - and a night off.

It was a special occasion, it was nice of them to take her home so you could stay and enjoy yourself. Let it go!!

Maybe she was hungry? Have they ever taken DD off you before? Maybe a few instructions would have been helpful - something you could remember for next time? TBH, I would be over the moon if my DD had GP's i could offload her to once in a while. I wouldn't really care or be livid if she ate a McDonalds once in a blue moon.

Sorry but have to agree with the others on this. Thats what grandparents are for! To indulge their grandkids. Don't mean to sound harsh but you really need to calm yourself.

She didn't need it, that's true. Nobody needs mcdonalds. But it won't hurt her. Pick your battles, that's my advice. Most stuff isn't worth getting your knickers in a knot about, honestly it's not.

If you had said to them "Don't take her to mcdonalds, we don't allow it" and they had taken her anyway, that would have been something to be livid about.

Don't worry, my mum used to take DD for McD's when she was that age, even though we were never taken as children - I see it as a one-off that GPs can get away with. My mum would do it because if she was out with DD it was the cheapest/easiest way to feed her if away from home longer than expected. It's caused DD no lasting harm! Are you sure they don't mean a full Happy Meal?

Well I'd be pissed off, however unresonable that makes me. If your PIL know that you don't feed her McD's normally, plus the fact that she didn't need a meal anyway. And three pieces of wedding cake?!

I know that one night like this won't do any damage, but it's just so pointless!

An adult portion of what though?

If it was a burger and fries and you took it apart and put it on a dinner plate, it'd still look pretty sparse.

If it was a Big Mac or a quarter pounder and fries I'd say that's too much for a 2yr old...but then again most 2yr olds with a normal appetite would probably only eat half that amount.

Crikey she must have been pretty hungry to eat all that.
