AIBU?

To be getting pissed off with DP's "opinion"?

DP has an intense dislike of cats which he told me about when we first met. I thought it wouldn't matter, we're all different etc but I did warn him that I had one and that me and my DCs are cat lovers. He said fair enough, he just didn't like them. Anyway after a while he would just go on and on about how horrible cats were. He'd say they just use you etc. Like if my cat was moiwing at the door he'd say something like "here it is, to take your food and then bugger off again". I ignored it for a bit but does he really need to mention this stuff EVERY time?? anyway he upset my DD at the weekend with this comment:

"Cats must be amongst the most awful, evil creatures that exist. They just kill things for the sake of it. A poor bird spends ages and works like hell to build up a little nest and what happens, awful cat grabs hold of it, rips it to pieces and what's worse is, it does it for fun. It doesn't even eat what it kills, it just rips innocent animals apart for fun. They're disgusting animals."

He finished it off with a description of a half maimed bird flapping around on the garden path dying in agony. DD is now saying she doesn't want our cat to live with us anymore because it's cruel.
I know we're all entitlled to our own opinions and likes and dislikes but isn;t he going overboard??

I always think it betrays a person's deep seated issues when they claim not to like cats because cats are 'users'.

They're usually the same people who like dogs because dogs are 'so devoted and unconditionally adoring'.

He sounds weird and like he should STFU and stop upsetting your DD. Especially if he doesn't even live in your house.

He just sounds like he really doesn't like cats. And he hasn't actually said anything that isn't true, has he? Cats do hunt and kill even when they're not hungry. It's their nature

Tell him if he doesn't like your cat, he's free to bogger off back to his own flat.

Although I do think cats love us with unconditional indifference

True though innit.

My cat constantly kills stuff for fun, leaves it in the garden... decapitated birds, severed mice.

And it comes in, eats and always escapes upstairs somehow and leaves black hairs on my pillow.

I think I'm with your DP

what an awful thing to say to your dd. whats he like otherwise?

Report
claireybear82 · 07/01/2011 12:03

yeah but to be fair birds arnt totally innocent. they are theives for a start. they will nick anything to "work to build up the nest" and what about those poor worms just rolling around in the mud before SWOOSH big bad bird just eats them all up

I have a really evil chicken, so birds are not always blameless that's for sure

YANBU.

He should accept that there is a cat in your family, surely? It's not like you bought him a kitten for Christmas, the cat has been in DD's life longer than "D"P has!

I'm in the same situation, by the way - minus the DCs and the comments. DP just has to accept that I have two cats. They live in my house, and now so does he. He gets cross sometimes when they walk all over the surfaces when he's trying to cook, or he treads in a hairball, but one of his favourite stories is about the time Mango (the one on my profile) brought in a blackbird and proceeded to eat it's head all over DP's naked foot Grin. Mango luuuuurves his daddy LOL

I think he needs to be told that you have made a commitment to this animal and, while it could possibly survive homeless, it wouldn't cope as well as he would.

It's silly to apply human ideals about behaviour to animals.

ChickensAreFlyingUnderTheRadar · 07/01/2011 12:07

I don't know, melezka. My evil chicken seems quite knowing.

He sound insecure and childish. Compared to humans animal behaviour is so much better. Animals dont start wars pollute the pplanet abuse their children use poison gas or watch big brother. No comparison.

I forgot to mention I was precluding evil chickens from my comment.

So, he says all these things, what does he expect you to do about it? Because his persistence does rather sound as if he really wants you to get rid of the cat.

Creepy.

They're cats, they do what they were designed to do, whether that's "fair" on the poor birdies or not.

Sit him down and show him the Lion King.

I used to have a friend who believed that cats were evil, she said it was all in their 'eyes'.

If he's nice in every way, but hates cats, I would excuse this, but ask him not to go on about it in front of your daughter. If he's not nice, and tbh, he does sound a bit odd (but I could also rant on about how much I hate dogs), then see this as a red flag. But definitely tell him no horror stories, you have a cat and you want your daughter to like and accept cats, it's HIS problem not to be shared.

He sounds like a right twat.

And an immature one at that.

I have always believed that people who dislike animals are not all that nice to other humans either.

Agree he obviously doesn't like cats. Agree with him re his views on cats hunting birds, but telling that to your daughter sounds unnecessary unless she asked him why he didn't like cats. Calling cats evil sounds OTT as they are just behaving like cats and no more evil than any other species of cat.
Can you have a relationship with a man who doesn't like cats? That will exclude alot of men if you can't. Can he shut up about them when with you and your daughter?
I think starting a relationship with someone who has pets rather than choosing a pet together can be difficult, especially if the pet owner treats their pet like a member of the family.
