Traditional English Dinners

Camomila · 10/10/2019 11:18

I was browsing through the meal planning threads for ideas and I noticed lots of people are quite varied in the cuisines they cook (eg, stir fry, curry, pasta, fajitas). The most common 'English foods' were shephards pie, Sunday Roast, and sausages and mash.

DSs two favourite foods at nursery are mackeral and 'the pie with the vegetables and the tasty stuff (chicken?)' and they both strike me as very English/British.

Does anyone else have any other traditional things they cook regularly?

(I'm not British so looking to expand my cooking horizons a bit)

Cottage pie, lamb hot pot, chicken and ham pie, fish pie. Basically think filling and stodgy (I love my stodge!)

What do you all have the pies with? Salad, different non-pie vegetables, or some kind of potato?

I've always enjoyed the pies with pastry on top at peoples houses or in restautants so I think thats what I'm going to try first one Saturday or Sunday lunch time.

Pies with tons of green veg here, I’m not a fan of double carbs!

Bubble and squeak 💓
Pie with pastry is chips or new potatoes in skin and a couple of veg.
Pie with mash I just make slightly larger pies and have an extra veg so maybe cauliflower, peas and carrots i.e.

I love roast dinners and regardless of it being meat or poultry, Yorkshire puds are a must for me. Apple sauce with pork and I like crackling.

Bangers and mash is lovely with lots of gravy, same with toad in the hole.

Lamb chops - yum!

Lasagne, wonderful.

Macaroni cheese.

Jacket potatoes with various fillings (I'm going to have one today with tinned pilchard in tomato sauce).

I don't do much cooking now but my son is an excellent cook, I think I shall invite myself to his asap :-).

Feeling hungry now.

Any mention of pie makes me think of macaroni cheese pie with chips and garlic bread solely for the purposes of putting the willies up the carb fearers.

But in reality I would have a meat or chicken pie with veg, mash and gravy. I don't understand the 'double carbs' fear, because if I was having mash, I'd probably have less pie, or leave some of the pastry so it all works out about the same.

If you want real old school traditional British food, you could have liver and bacon in onion gravy with mash and veg such as cabbage and carrots.

We have beef and stilton pie tonight. Will serve with roasted parsnips and carrots, with buttered leeks.

Pease pudding
Vegetarian now, but I remember meat pie, steak and kidney pudding (without the kidney), Lancashire hotpot, shepherd's pie made with the cold roast, and braised steak and onions. I'm sure there were others.

Oh yum Caspianberg (can I come?).

Pease pudding, yes please Spartacus. My mum used to make gorgeous pease pudding. I don't like steak and kidney or braised steak but adore Lancashire hot pot.

I've gone completely of carbs atm (hyperemisis, hence starting lots of food threads! I really miss food)

I've been surprised no one has really missed them when we all eat the same thing (frittata and green veg, plain chicken and green veg, and fish fingers and green veg...my 3 staple dinners)

Is it all carbs or just certain ones you've gone off? I think your problem with wanting to cook traditional British dishes but not carbs, is that our traditional food is quite carby, probably because the weather is cold and wet a lot of the time, so we want warm comforting stodge, although you could make a stew with meat and veg in and not a lot of potatoes, and forget about the suet dumplings or pancakes.

What sort of food is your 'home' cuisine? As you can get a very wide range of ingredients in the UK, there's probably lots of things that are not British and different to what you normally cook that you could try.

I don't know about traditionally English, to me that is meat and three veg, fish and chips and a bit stodgy, meaty and limited as we are trying to eat less (hardly any) meat.

My staples are:

-Vegetable curries of various descriptions

  • Macaroni cheese, peas and broccoli trees
  • Bean/lentil chilli, yogurt, tortilla chips, avocado, grated cheese
  • Vegetable sausages, chips and beans
  • Roasted veg and halloumi with crusty bread to dip up the juice
  • Tortilla pizzas with potato salad and green salad
  • Beer battered cod, chips and peas
  • Fish pie
  • Prawn and veg stir fry with noodles
  • Cottage pie but made with puy lentils instead of mince
  • Nut roast with all the trimmings
  • Glamorgan sausages with all the trimmings
  • Cheese and onion pie with all the trimmings
  • Katsu curry - trying various meat substitutes instead of chicken at the moment (trying Vivera plant "chicken" goujons this week)

We do home made Cornish pasties, Lancashire hotpot (but just with lamb not oysters), Roast chicken with sausagemeat and herb stuffing, roast pork with apple sauce and crackling, shepherd's pie, steak and kidney or steak and onion pie or suet pudding, traditional fry up, cheese on toast, chicken tikka masala (a UK dish not known in India)

Puddings: rice pudding, steamed ginger sponge, steamed treacle sponge, steamed sticky toffee pud, vanilla sponge cake, coffee and walnut, scones with jam and cream. I think all these are British

I'm not planning to cook anything until the baby gets here Smile I can't even go in the kitchen atm.

Afterwards I'll hopefully eat everything again!

My home cuisine is Italian, I've been 4m ish without pasta, pizza, gnocchi, risotto or bread Sad
