Wedding dress fuck up... 6 months until wedding

partyinapark · 14/07/2019 18:06

I went for my dress fitting today and they completely fucked up the measurements in the bust (my boobs are 32J and this cup was about a C cup). There's nothing they can do to alter it and they said a new dress wouldn't be ready until at least October. Wedding is November.

I have totally lost confidence in them and do not trust them to do it right. I think I need to ask for the deposit back and go to a completely different shop for a new dress. But is it too late? And can anyone advise on wedding dresses for big boobs please?? Will they give me my deposit back?

I would get your deposit back and look to buy off the rack. I am wearing a dress with straps so I can have a bra on. Don't need to worry about built in cups and they always put heavily padded ones in, which make me look all boob!

Yeah I know what you mean... None of the dresses I've ever tried on HAVEN'T had the padding. Where am I going wrong??

Straps is a definite

The ones I tried I was told the cups could easily be removed and that's the type you need. Do you have any big discount warehouses nearby?

Their error means they should refund everything. I ordered my wedding dress three months before and got it 2 weeks before the day. It can be done. Get yourself the refund and go shopping! Mine wasn't off the peg either, it was ordered in and I got alterations done too. It can be done!

Will have a look for warehouses, delilah

Waitwhatnow...phew. Thank you. That's really reassuring

What a horrible situation for for 😔 have you tried wed2b? I got mine from there off the rack and paid to have it altered x

I got a made to measure dress from the House of Fraser bridal department in 6 weeks, you have plenty of time.

Violetroselily · 14/07/2019 18:43

Can it be taken somewhere else for alterations?

I have no idea what I'm talking about, but surely there is something that can be done to make it bigger??

I had a problem like this too. I'm very tall and insisted the assistants took note off this. They promised they had. The dress turned up and was touching the top of my shoeless feet. Obviously as disaster. I got a refund, asked arpund and found quite a large number of wedding dress shops will make you a dress in less than six minths( mine was made in 3 and is a quite fancy number). They charge you more but you should be able to get a good fit, if ypivexplain to then the issue you've just had they may be able to advise better.

If you give a vague idea of location perhaps some posters will be able to recommend shops in the vicinity?

Good luck

And have it altered when you get it. Search on here filtering by uk only to ensure quicker delivery.

Eeeek! I think you’re 100% right not to trust them after a screw up, you’ll be panicking right until the big day. The shop ordered my (slimline, beaded top to toe so no give at all) dress a size smaller than my normal - I’d ordered a size above my normal. Only had six weeks to loose 4 inches. Not fun. I was the most vile git you’ve ever met, stressed and bloody starving!

Wed2Be might be a good option? Off the peg and reasonably priced, then a local seamstress if you need any alterations?

Thanks all I will look into all suggestions.

Unfortunately the top part of the dress is just way way way too small. She suggested covering it over with tulle (massive eye roll, it just looked absolutely pathetic when she tried it)... She was desperate at that point I think.

I just want a completely new dress at this point. The whole situation put me right off it and I don't ever want to deal with the shop again.

Do you want the same dress but from elsewhere or starting again?

I turned up for a fitting a month before the wedding and they had ordered in a totally different dress.
I cried. They insisted it was the correct dress etc anyway -
They ordered me the correct dress and it arrived a week before the wedding. This wasn’t ideal but this ordering 6 months in advance business isn’t necessarily true.

I bought my wedding dress the day I tried it on, from a standard wedding dress shop. They had it in their warehouse as they had intended it to be available for trying on but had been sent two for some reason. The fitter told me it happened regularly and they even gave me a £300 discount.

I would call round local dress shops and ask what they have available off the peg in your size, then go try on. You might not find anything you love in which case you'll need to gamble on ordering, but you never know, you might find the right dress to take away there and then

its in Harlow but commutable from you - the shop doesn't look that "posh" (long racks lots of dresses) from outside but they do have lovely dresses & the ladies & the dress makers were superb lots of variety some off pegs (& much cheaper than elsewhere) worth a visit (its in the Stow away from the small group of shops away from the centre of Harlow) well recommend (dd had a beautiful dress but there was another young "curvy" woman who was there at same time & the dress she had really suited her - she looked really lovely too

There is a plus size wedding dress shop in Essex. Obviously you would have to have it altered as you are a 32 back but they maybe able to cater for your chest.

Report
LIZS · 14/07/2019 19:21

If it was made to measure can they not just redo the bodice?

Report
partyinapark · 14/07/2019 19:44

Plus size off the peg and then altered might be the way forward.

Will check out the Harlow shop

The entire dress would need to be remade again, lizs. The customer service has been terrible, they haven't done what they said they would do, I looked obscene. And they were trying to avoid taking any blame. I no longer like the dress, I just want my money back and to move on from the sorry affair!

Many years ago I bought a dress four sizes too big and had everything apart from the bust taken in which worked really well. She even sewed my strapless bra into it so it was a really secure fit if that makes sense.

Graphista · 14/07/2019 21:15

Used to work in the industry.

Definitely aim to get a full refund as they have totally messed up!

Did they take your measurements themselves?

Off the peg for speed - should definitely be possible in London, plus size retailers could definitely be way to go, BUT use a professional wedding seamstress (which frankly this definitely doesn't sound is the case here!), you could ask on mn for recommendations.

You do have time but I wouldn't hang about.

Talk to this company in London, they're brilliant: www.bridaldressalterations.com

They did my dress and my friend's as well and were really good, no nonsense dressmakers, as well as proper professionals. 6 months is plenty of time - my first fitting was late August for a wedding in October. I can also recommend the website I bought my dress from, it arrived within a week and was ok for cleavage - although I'm an E so a bit smaller: www.kittyanddulcie.com A good seamstress would be able to make it all work though.
