Crapping hell - DH has done all of Christmas and I don't even have a present for him

CanoeingInCocoPop · 15/12/2018 14:58

I've had a stressy December and Christmas has pretty much slipped my mind Shock

Been opening the door to parcels today - and the penny's dropped that DH has taken the initiative got Christmas lists for the kids & ordered the necessary stuff. He then turns up with a car boot full of christmassy snacks & has now pootled off to a Christmas tree farm.

I've expressed appreciation - and been told that that's what partnership is about - but crapping hell I don't have a present for him! Correction - I have a multipack of socks laid aside for him - which is somehow so much worse than even nothing.

Last delivery dates hurtling towards me - and I'm proper panicking I'm an awful person here! If the genders were reversed - this'd be so judged!

MN gift guide for men has been no help because:

  • he doesn't drink
  • he's very particular about his gadgets, and there's no point getting something in that vein without specific instructions
  • he won't want clothes because he's been talking about losing weight in new year, so I'll get it wrong either by having it fit wrong or by having the size he doesn't want

Edibles not needed - he's got a lot already. Possibly like house stuff.. or something for the office ...- though that feels a bit odd for a Christmas present... or nice toiletries (though nice ones are pricey and cheaper ones feel like you didn't put much thought in).

Please hive mind - hit me with something awesome...

He sounds a good egg. Theatre, sports or other 'experience' tickets?

What is he interested in? If you left him in e.g. a bookshop, which section would you find him in? What does he talk about with his friends? That might help spark some ideas.

Emergency!! What a great DH you have Xmas Grin

Depending on budget here are things have gone down well for men in my life:
Coffee stuff - either an aeropress or a mizudashi cold brew coffee maker at one end, or a full on espresso maker
House stuff - The Tartan Blanket Company do lovely sofa blankets for £35, nicely packaged and looks much dearer. Or massive sheepskins from John Lewis
Cufflinks - you can buy antique Victorian ones on eBay posted in time for Christmas
The ordnance survey do personalised maps?

What's he into? Hobbies, likes/dislikes. My dbro loves steak and tech, we got him a sous-vide stick and reusable bag for the food.

There are also lovely cuff-links that you can get personalised (in a tasteful way) on not on the high street.

What does he like? Have a travel through Amazon or look up the things suggested by pp.

I'd do him a home-made token for either the next tech thing he wants or for a weekend away and a promise to sort next year. But I'd write him a card saying how much I appreciated his help and just something small to unwrap. This year I bought dh's present in July because that's when he found something he actually wanted (posh fitness watch). Sounds like he just wants you to have a happy stress free Christmas!

Or a fitbit/ garmin for the health kick?

Does he like cooking? -> a raclette set

The nice things in life -> personalised wallet from Aspinal

New shoes / boots / timberlands / trainers - won't lose weight on his feet!

You’ve got loads of time! I don’t think a man would be judged for not having got anything yet would they? It’s not Christmas yet! I haven’t bought DH anything yet (I’m 39 weeks pregnant and not really in the Christmas spirit!) but I’m not panicking, we have amazon prime Wink.
What sort of thing does he like? Any hobbies?

He likes:

Very complicated home sound systems (and obscure music to put on them)

Lounging around in bed or having a long bath watching nonsense on YouTube

Left wing politics (apart from when it depresses him)

Star Trek

Not really into food - but likes home comforts (like nice tableware, fluffy towels) - but house is a shithole right now (in terms of messy and in terms of weird broken things/doors of their hinges etc) - so it feels a bit odd to be putting expensive new stuff in iykwim (though a super cosy house would probably be his favourite Christmas thing)

Ah what a sweetheart.

Maybe cooking gadgets for the health kick? Our nutribullet gets used alot. I've bought my DH some fancy herb scissors, a meat thermometer and a potato ricer. Also a book related to his triathlon training

Cashmere scarf and hat? So comfortable and soft and warm, and one size. It’s the kind of luxurious thing that a lot of men wouldn’t buy for themselves.

A lock-picking practise kit (apparently this has been quite popular with many recipients).

Does he enjoy cooking? I know it’s edibles but it’s a bit more interesting I think - A year’s subscription to a curry kit/box or round-the-world cuisines or similar - a nice way to try new things and can double as a weekly or monthly ‘date night’ for the two of you.

Out-of-the box thinking: a monthly delivery of flowers? Really it’d be both of yours, but it’s lovely, and you could have it booked for his birthday or your anniversary to make it more personal.

I got my OH a Lego Sopwith Camel (aircraft) one year and the Sydney Opera House another year, he really enjoyed building those.

Book a night away in January for the two of you and arrange for a baby sitter?

A selection of coffee table books on one of his interests.

OK - panic subsiding:

He indeed does not have a wallet currently.

Fitbit was last years present (if I didn't expect it to be revived in January - he also doesn't have a watch. Do you need a watch if you have a Fitbit?)

A lamp would glare his monitor... but his office chair is a wobbly kitchen chair ...

If he likes new Star Trek I bought a Star Trek disco t-shirt for my husband (like the ones they were exercising around the discovery). Got mine off eBay in an exercise material.

A fancy coffee machine for his office, if he doesn’t share the office that is.

If he's planning on losing weight, the FitBit thing might be a goer!

Alternatively, what about an Apple Watch loaded with some sort of fitness app that could help him in the new year?

I once bought my DH a super car race day, he loved it. If he's not into cars, there are plenty of other things he could experience! Just watch out for the expiry date on those things though as I have been caught out before!

I haven't rtft so apologies if I'm repeating something that has already been suggested!

Good luck! ThanksThanks

If he likes fluffy towels how about a nice bathrobe/ dressing gown. I bought one last for DH but can’t remember which website I used, sorry. If I can find the email I’ll let you know.

calypso my spider senses light snooping are telling me that his & hers dressing gowns are one of 'my' Christmas presents! But that's on the right lines obviously - since it's what he picked, kind of for himself as well as me!

What about a new wallet with currency for a future trip? I'm not getting DP a gift but a trip for later in the year thinking Krakow, lovely hotels not very expensive. As I'm getting older I'm going for experiences over presents.

Your husband sounds absolutely lovely!

If he doesn't have a wallet atm, you can't go wrong with that.

He also sounds the type to appreciate a real good quality dressing gown.

I've done photo calendars for DH a few times - a desk calendar for his office - and he loves those. It's not too late to order one if you have time to sort the photos.

Past experience with my DH (and the other men in my life) is that giving them the luxury version of something they already have, is a nice treat and ticks the practical/useful/will use box we gift givers fret about! In my instance, posh wool slippers, a limited edition single malt (know your DH doesn't drink, but an example) a north face backpack, Mont Blanc pen etc. Useful, practical and received with appreciation.
