Magazine Subscription?

Is anyone giving magazine subscriptions for presents this Christmas - and if so, which website are you using to order them? My sisters want Red/Easy Living type magazines.

Although mine are for children. I'm using my tesco clubcard vouchers. The offers are such a good deal, much cheaper than other places when I looked around

Google it. Compare as some are cheaper if you take out more than one subscription. It's sometimes better to take out the subscription offer that the mag itself advertises as you get freebies. Managed to get some nice hair products and Revlon make-up when I took out a subscription for my friend before. Also not all magazines are available on subscription from general companies, for example I found that Company magazine, I think it was that one, was only available thru their website only.

Would NG Kids be suitable for a bright (but not especially worldly or mature) 9-10yo boy?

Would Animals & You be good for a bright (animal loving, but increasingly precocious) 7-8yo girl?

Easy Living are doing 12 months for £12 at the moment, with a free gift as well. Just check their website.

prob a bit older than 7 - but dd is fab reader so no problem. Probably years 4-6? YOu can buy single copies in most supermarkets

NG Kids - definitely. I was told (on here I think) that NG Kids was for younger ones, so we didn't try it. I saw a copy recently and thought ds2 (9) would love it, so mum is getting him a subs (with Tesco vouchers) for Christmas.

We got Nat Geographic for a year, but didn't like it: too American.

ds1 (11) and scarily nerdy gets BBC Focus Magazine

They also (both joint) get First News every week. We've been getting it for c.18 months (since it started) and they read it every week.

First News sounds way too serious for my lot, lol. But the DFC thing, I think we'd have hair-pulling over that, too.

Now, Just got to figure out if Animals & You is too baby-ish for a 7-8yo??

First News isn't serious at all: it's really aimed at children and they love it.

There is always a page of funny news, a page of animal stories, a double-page of world news, loads of competitions, recipes, loads of sport, save-the-planet-type stuff. It's really accessible.

I subscribed before it even came out, because I thought it would be 'worthy and educational' and wanted to encourage it But it isn't at all, it's really at their level.

Roisin, do your DC moan loudly whenever NewsRound comes on CBBC? Mine view it (at best) as an extended toilet break opportunity...

They started groaning at Newsround when they were about 7 and 9. Before that they did used to watch it.

Actually they used to watch Newsround before they got First News and discovered that "News" could be interesting and entertaining and fun!

Just to butt in, but rspca do subscriptions too, £11 for under 12's with free gift and 7 magazines, can get a form from their website. rspb do one too, lovely mag and free gift.

Actually, DD did demand (out of her pocket money, mind) I buy her the BBC wildlife mag, recently. I wonder if it's too grown up, though.

I like the look of that lljkk - especially as you can buy it with Tesco vouchers! I haven't actually seen a copy though, and we have quite a lot of subs atm, so I thought I might wait until one runs out and maybe get that for a year and see what it's like.

Ds (7) loves it but doesn't read from cover to cover yet so def more years in it for him. There is a younger version, so maybe that is the one you were told about, Roisin.

What age is Dfc aimed at approx?

Well ... DesperateHousewifeToo Philip Pullman is involved with the Dfc and he vehemently and extremely eloquently does not agree with age-banding on books, so I am hesitant to repsond to that ...

..but... It's not primary colours and bright and bouncy (and I don't like the look of it, so it's hard for me to day). So personally I can't say it appealing to children much younger than 8 or 9. Certainly eminently suitable for 11-13 yr-olds.

I know Califrau's ds loves it, and I can't remember how old he is. But I think still quite young - 7 or 8?
