I have 3 and a half rolls of toilet paper left. 2 toilets, 3 kids.

I have half a packet of pasta left. Fancy tricolour twists too, not just normal yellow stuff.

We have a couple of tins each of beans, tomatoes and soup.

Not panicking, what will be will be.

Ask me anything

Pattern or plain toilet paper

Why haven’t you bought more? No need to go crazy and wipe the shelves clean but surely sensible and responsible to have well stocked cupboards and freezers right now.

How long has the pasta been in the cupboard? Are you using up something you've saved for best, or something nobody wanted?

What meals do you have planned to eke out your hoard? Please share so we can get some ideas.

Have you rationed the toilet paper? If so, how many sheets are allowed per business?

Report
MynameisJune · 14/03/2020 08:01

What are you going to do when it runs out? Newspaper or shower head?

Is the pasta left over from a Brexit hoard? I have several packets of spaghetti dated best before Jan 2020 in my cellar, those and the tins of peaches are starting to look pretty appetising now Grin

If you had to stay at home for 1/2weeks what would you really want in your cupboard?

I think we need coffee because I can’t face the headaches. Possible tea will be enough.

Is it out of necessity? Are you on low income? Sounds like you could qualify for some food bank assistance if you can’t even afford to have a pack of rice spare or anything.

I can understand fatalism from an individual, I was very much a ‘ride the wave and don’t fret the dawn’ sort of person for years.
But then I had children and felt responsible for their wellbeing and security.
So my question is, do you have enough alternative food and drink to provide for them, once the pasta is gone? Or are you as sanguine about their immediate future, and relying on others to provide?

@purpleberry11 it has squares and is floral scented. Think its Aldi stuff.

@Moctodtensmum there was pasta and loo roll in co-op yesterday. Would have got some but had forgotten my purse to had to use points to pay for the milk for breakfast (had key fob on car keys) and I'll nip again later today. Maybe I should have gone last night! Not panicking at all but just buying as normal.

@MutteringDarkly maybe a week - kids had the other half as they didnt fancy our tea. Had fresh stuff in so using that up first and pasta is often for when kids decide they no longer like what we're having!

Are you me? I'm in lockdown Italy and not panicking over the lack of spare loo roll and pasta in the house. Might pop to the supermarket tomorrow though.

@LuluJakey1 we eat lots of fresh vegetables and they seem to be readily available. I freeze a lot of meals too so have a decent amount in the freezer already. Have lots of basic ingredients in - flour, suet, polenta, pulses so I'm sure we can have lots of stews and casseroles.

@RevealTheHiddenBeach kids often don't wipe their bottoms (or at least properly!) anyway - its something we are working on 😂 but they do have baths every night. Not rationing toilet paper

@MynameisJune we have a bidet 😉

@Gwlondon I ran out of hot chocolate yesterday. I dont drink tea or coffee and try and avoid (unsuccessfully) sweet stuff but hot chocolate is warm and comforting.

@Dyrne I work in the heritage sector and my husband is in finance - we don't qualify for child benefit due to his income so it's not a money thing, it's just I buy a lot of fresh stuff so shop weekly. We have lots of dried foods - we could live for 2 or 3 weeks without buying more food but it wouldn't be particularly healthy or interesting.

@AllPointsNorth I don't think we really should be bulk buying - we can afford to but others in the community may not be able to. Why should I deprive others to benefit myself? We'll eat what we can get if we can't get our usual stuff but we'll survive.

This thread was meant to be a bit jokey saying I'm not stressing and panic buying and a change from all the panicky threads! But thank you for all your concerns.. will update later as getting kids ready.

Nacho I was joking too! Grin

My idea of a recipe with beans is tip a tin of kidney beans and a tin of butterbeans (rinsed ) into a bowl and pour over soy sauce. I call it 'bean salad'. It is clearly a complex recipe and not for those who have no cookery training- so many stages and so much that can go wrong.

Are you normally an extreme risk taker op?

Report
Haggisfish · 14/03/2020 08:54

an extreme risk taker?! Op I’m in the same situation. I’m planting some potatoes today...I’ll send you some in 8 weeks or so if we can hang on in there until then.Grin

Op- do you have a supply of tissues , or do you use the toilet roll as tissue?

Do you have any good receipts for pasta?
I tend to boil my pasta then pour in a jar of sauce. I don't expect others to be quite so adventurous. Oh and sometimes I go the extra mile and throw in some peas or sweetcorn.

OK. So you do actually have plenty of food if you have enough dried stuff to last you 2-3 weeks... not sure what the point of this thread is then; unless it’s to mock the people worried because they don't have enough to feed their children for that long... Hmm

YABU for buying scented loo roll. Not at all good for your intimate areas!!

Report
NachoNachoMan · 14/03/2020 09:36

@Dyrne it was to have a bit of light heartedness as practically every other thread on here is now doom and gloom and worry. It would never be to mock people. I've never said I don't have enough food, I'm fortunate to be able to afford to fill my cupboards and to buy what I choose not what I can afford. I just think people have gone a bit crazy! I actually wouldn't want to panic buy and clear the shelves because how is that helpful to the society I live in?

@nohungosh yes I am you

@LuluJakey1 nice... glad you rinse them as they're a bit gooey if you don't Grin

@RJnomore1 & @haggisfish
I have be known the take a few risks in my life - some recent examples and a notable one:

  • taking the newly toilet trained toddler out for a few hours last month and remembering at the top of our street that I'd forgotten the bag with spare clothes - and I didn't turn around and get them she weed 2 minutes in the car seat from home, oops
  • not taking sweets/snacks on a 2hr mid afternoon train journey because I can be a good mum and entertain my kids bought overpriced snacks from the buffet cart within 10 minutes
  • went to a naice hotel many years ago, theatre followed by dinner. Pretty sure my bf was going to propose... and he did! We joke around a lot with each other, and when he asked I took off my top and my best underneath said YES and a pic of a ring (would have looked silly if he saw that and he hadnt proposed!) Pleased that one paid off. (If you know me IRL that's me exposed!)

@emilybrontescorsett we use muslin cloths or hankies. Or sleeves.

Try to avoid eating pasta with receipts 😉 Usually cook it with some roast veg and halloumi, or kids favourite is a ketchup and grated cheddar.

@althevestr1t my hubby bought it, I did tell him off at the time. However, this is AMA not AIBU 😉😉

@crosser62 kids have shitty arses even if I had 100 rolls of loo roll and there was no threat weeks of being self isolated. Wash me down in the bath and stick flannels in the wash, kids are clean again ready to get covered in poo the next day, wash and repeat.
In a seriousness though I am trying to work on them wiping their bums properly. But why spend a minute doing that when you can just wipe quickly and have a minute longer building a train track for Thomas the Tank??
