Hi all I can't see a thread about this conference next week in London (QEII). Lots of great speakers including Maya introducing Allison Bailey! Is anyone going? I'm considering going to some of it. Any idea if there will be protestors outside? My (elderly) mum is going.

Jen was carrying/wearing a recording device, a dictaphone I believe, inside women's toilets.

On the recent thread, there's a message from a woman who also attended the conference sharing how uncomfortable and distressed this makes her, even in retrospect.

I'm a woman who has no problem with trans people, but doesn't wish to share intimate spaces like bathroom facilities with male-bodied people.

This is why we need third spaces. Women's toilets and the like are there to maintain privacy and dignity, not to validate anyone's gender identity.

I see that Jen Ives has posted videos of the altercation on Twitter - taken by the person who approached them. They’re also saying that they personally didn’t record anything from inside the women’s toilets.

I wish I'd looked on this thread on the day - we could've had a meetup!

Humourous take on the 'Tunnocks' involvement:

I buy them anyway but put extra in my basket this week.

If they booked a ticket they will have been aware of the ‘pink system’. Sounds a bit... dodgy to deliberately take photos and post them online (with or without threats). I dont expect the police will bother though..

I had a pink lanyard on but I accepted the reality that if some nasty fucker was taking surreptitious pics to out people (totally right side of progressive history to do that, honest), or if I was caught sideways on then there wasn't much I could do. It was a risk, but I know there often comes a time when you have to roll with that. I'm on the pic that was shared around on Twitter with an invitation to dox, but by chance I had leaned forward so I am obscured by the person in front of me. I haven't seen myself anywhere else.

I wish that I'd thought to post on here while I was there. Tbh I was too pre-occupied with getting to London and all the logistics. I might have even spoken to some of you without realising.

I was on a stall but I won't say which one.

I think we'd have to ask individuals to take down pics we were in. I had a pink lanyard on but I guess we all run the risk people will publish our pics and we won't even know unless we come across them?

I would assume there were t&c when booking the ticket

I hadn't even thought about the doxxing angle.

There were pink lanyards for people who didn't consent to be in any photographs. So if someone publishes photos of anyone in pink lanyards (which I believe has already happened) is this a legal matter?

I can’t say I’ve ever made a recording in a loo. I did take a picture of a loo once - in a very fancy dinner venue (and no one was in there) - it was absolutely amazing, huge mirrors, draining tables...

Otherwise, why go and record in bad faith?

Report
FloralBunting · 26/10/2021 14:48

No, I don't have evidence of a toilet recording, I'm just going by what the person claimed/insinuated with KM. I will of course be quite happy if no such recording exists. I've been having private discussions with people, men and women who attended and are extremely concerned they were either recorded intimately or are going to be doxxed. So, no, I don't much give a crap if the arseholes currently simultaneously calling lesbians liars while insisting we're like racists if we don't fuck men are painted in a bad light because some of their number have also made a claim to have recorded women in the toilet.

@JulesRimetStillGleaming

Was just looking for the writer on Twitter but can't see a Twitter account.

The journalist has previously experienced pile-ons and withdrew from Twitter at that time, iirc.

Talking of write ups - of you get a mo, you might want to send some love the BBCs way for their article on lesbians being ‘pressured into sex’ because there is a wave of tantrums going their way (and demands it be deleted/burned/ashes shot into space).

That's a good write up. I hope Lesbian and Gay News continues to be successful, it's a great resource.

I was at the conference and didn't witness any of this. I would say that there were people at the conference with a broad range of views - as there are at most conferences where any groups of individuals gather - and that we don't all share the same views.

It sounds though that there is more of a backstory to this than is painted in Pink News. I'm sorry that this incident happened and it doesn't reflect my views. However, if the incident was provoked then that puts a different complexion on it.

This is a brief (just under 12 minutes long) recording from a woman delegate who witnessed most of the altercation. It was on Twitter, so I assume it's OK to link here. twitter.com/SWFourteen/status/1452694276069109775?s=20 This is the link to the tweet where I saw this. Here's the direct link to the video on Google Photos. tinyurl.com/phdavn22 Click on the Play symbol on the photo. Very clear, very measured, and makes far more sense of the confused nonsense about this I was reading on Twitter last night.

I’m going by what I’ve heard and haven’t yet listened to the podcast. That’s not appropriate so I’ll get MN to remove my comment now & I’ll listen to it tonight. Then I can say for sure.

@TeamRex

going into the women's toilets, as it turned out to record women without their consent, was fairly goady behaviour.

What's the evidence of them recording in the toilets?

I would like to know this as well. I saw the interview with K Montgomerie where the situation was stated (reading between the lines, this person loudly made a very bad taste “joke” about “going to use the women’s toilets now” and was berated by someone, who rather inevitably took offence. It might have been implied that recording was occurring at all times, but I haven’t seen any evidence the person actually used the women’s toilet, nor any that recording occurred there. I think it’s important that we remain factual.

Attending a conference in bad faith, and being deliberately provocative, then playing the victim when the inevitable backlash occurs is the real story here, I think. If anyone can provide evidence that something worse happened, I would be interested to hear it, and if such evidence is provided, I stand corrected, but we shouldn’t repeat unfounded rumours or we will be doing what we are often accused of, which is implying people are sexual predators without evidence in order to smear their community.
