I think in the US they are more fierce about turfing people off the plane if they are ‘disruptive’. However I’ve never witnessed it when flying in the states (rather disappointed!).

Removing her would have delayed the flight, possibly coursing it to miss it's take off window and have to wait for the next gap. At best it would cause a headache for the airspace control people, and at worse piss of hundreds of passengers if they then have to wait on the plane until the runway is next free.I really don't think they would have done that lightly.

He may or may not of been an entitled arse, but he had specifically paid to be able to cut the line, so reasonably did so (if this should be available is another question but that's not the fault of the individual). She then seems to have started harassing the guy, for doing something he's allowed to do, making her the aggressor in this scenario. To be honest if someone was verbally abusing me all the way from security through the gates and on to the plane I would feel pretty uncomfortable too, and clearly the staff felt it was responsible to remove her or they wouldn't put themselves through all the extra work.

As an asside, if I was in anything other than slip ones I would automatically let the next person go ahead while I untied laces etc. Surly most people would.

They removed everyone from the plane because she refused to get off.

Thanks for explaining! Wow, it seems like her behaviour was appalling from beginning to end. Ridiculous to have this reported as if it was discrimination. I understand there are lots of credible accounts of Muslim passengers being mistreated - lumping this incident in with those helps absolutely no one (except "culture warrior" types on both sides.)

I bet there's way more to the story than that. Just another attempt to demonise white men.

I am wondering about the person who got off the plane in solidarity (is that what happened? He said he "had to get off his flight.") That misled me the first time I read the article, I thought there must have been some clear and obvious injustice to make someone feel strongly enough to miss his flight and lose his ticket!

But reading more carefully she was absolutely in the wrong. It seems like the other passenger just saw that a Muslim woman was being asked to leave and assumed it was for racist reasons.

At first I couldn't understand why they kicked her off if he was in business/first and she was in economy, you'd think there would be enough physical distance between them.

But then I read the part where she'd been filming him on the plane as well and NOPE, that's not okay, nobody should have to be trapped on a plane with someone openly targeting them for harassment (not even rich white men!) It's totally possible this man is also an ass but she was completely out of line from beginning to end. And the "Muslim woman" thing is a red herring, her behaviour even as described in the biased Independent article is ample justification for removing her.

The guy didn't do anything wrong. The airline messed up by having them all on one queue, which led to the impression that some were randomly being allowed to "skip". Had they been given separate queues, there would have been no false impression of skipping.
He was allowed to pass through, she took it as a personal insult because "white man vs Muslim woman" (which is also how you have categorized it OP, because you've ignored what actually happened to be deliberately incendiary). She then followed him, filmed him, harassed him. He did nothing wrong but was subjected to that.
The airline were right to kick her off. You dont get to behave like that and then stay on the plane.

BigFatLiar · 17/11/2020 09:55

If the report in the Independent article is true I'd have been uncomfortable with her. He passed the queue as he'd paid for that option. She followed him and continued filming and complaining while on the plane. I'd have been uncomfortable and intimidated.

It sounds as though the airline wasnt clear enough when it was handling the queues that some people didn't need the check and should have had a special area for them so no pushing past. Once the shoe fiddling woman had been told he had paid to avoid the check she should have backed down, not looked for racism and discrimination when there was none.
I worry about her being involved in politics as it sounds as though she doesn't reconsider an issue when given new evidence but ploughs on with her anti white male prejudice angle.
If she thinks people shouldn't be allowed to skip the queue because they are rich that's an issue to take up with the airline not the passengers.

She sounds great... not at all like a person who would get her teeth into something and make a huge stink, then assume sexism/racism/xenophobia/anti-Muslim sentiment and immediately write a piece about it.

My understanding (from the way it was reported) was that he had a pre-paid security check, allowing him to pass through the usual gate-checks.

She didn't realise this and took offence when he was waived through from the back of the line, while she was removing her shoes. Thinking she had her 'gotcha' discrimination moment, she started filming, following him, and generally being belligerent.

He was (probably) an entitled arse too, because I have class prejudice, and can't imagine him any other way.

@Harmarsuperstar

Whoever did what, surely a passenger shouldn't be able to decide who flies and who doesn't though?

A passenger can’t decide. Removing a passenger from a flight is actually a major undertaking, which makes me just a little bit sceptical about what has been reported so far.

Well she could have been a PITA or he could have been a dick. Possibly both. She got chucked off though so I think more info is needed before guessing tbh

I read her side but haven’t read any other versions so it’s hard to tell. She could have been being a big pain in the backside to be honest.

She was filming him as she had a go at him for going in front... Far too many people using their phones to shame people on SM where you only see the one side.
