Women and Christmas

Apologies if this has been done to death, but may I have a short rant with the like minded?
Everywhere right now, at the school gates, work, on social media, women are running themselves ragged while their male partners do sweet fa, or very little. So many women take on this responsibility and have it foisted on them.
It drives me potty!
My husband is in charge of Christmas here. I have health problems, so it's always fallen to him, apart from cooking. All the shopping, gifts, cards, organising, he does it. So then I get the 'ooh you've got him well trained" thing. No. Any adult can do these things.

Brussels sprouts are so named because they are the only size of cabbage that can be carried through the crowded Christmas streets of that city. They can cope with baguettes, but cabbages are just that bit too large. Also a true story.

Prolly Seneca, he had strong views about sprouts, as I recall. Xmas Grin

It was upheld as an article in the Act of Union. True story.

I wonder if that's what lead to Robert Burns saying "such a parcel of rogues in a nation." Grin

The thing with Thanksgiving, is that while the meal has to have certain elements, there are differences between North and South.

We're having capon. I refuse to cook a turkey and no one wanted goose. So, capon, beef, pork and gammon. And leftovers for the rest of the century.

It's a lesser known and as yet unrepealed ancient law, instituted by, I believe Edward iii in his later years that "ye tiny cabbages shall be eatene upon ye Christ's Mass." It was upheld as an article in the Act of Union. True story.

I love them.

It must be sort of like Thanksgiving in the US. The meal is highly prescriptive. Christmas is much less regimented; so many different cultural traditions at play.

Yup, definitely a sprouts at xmas dinner law in the U.K. It matters not if no one likes them. They must be on the table and you must put at least one on your plate. It. Is. the. Law.

My OH has done the majority of present buying, wrapping and will be making a splendid turkey dinner tomorrow.

Is there a law or something that you have to have sprouts for Christmas dinner in the UK

Yes , as Lynette says there is. It has been in force all of my lifetime. Like Lynnette , it's the only meal we eat them ( or push them round our plates) We have pheasant rather than turkey (one pheasant per every 2 people) but you still have to have sprouts

Apparently there was a fear there might be a shortage of spouts this year due to some sort of sprout eating beetle or moth.

Not blaming them for saying it. That's obviously what they think. I just found it sad.

I'm a member of a Facebook parenting group. One woman posted earlier about her husband refusing to wrap any presents, do any cooking or cleaning for Christmas and pestering her for sex. Lots of women replied saying it was the same for them. Not sure if they meant the sex part, but definitely the lack of christmas preparation. Yes on the one hand, there are some things the women were complaining about that personally I just would not do if my dp did nothing - writing cards and organising presents for his family for example, but some things have to do be done. If you have children, their presents need to be wrapped. If you want a Christmas dinner for you and for children if you have them, it has to be cooked. Another thing I noticed was that a few posters were saying "Men are all like this. They are crap" etc. I think by saying that's just what men are like, it gives the men an excuse to be lazy gits, and it makes the woman think she may as well stay with her husband - he's just a man and that's what men are like.

Yes, there is a law you have to have sprouts with Christmas dinner.

Even people who hate them are encouraged to eat just one.

I've just prepared two packets. It's the only meal of the year we eat them.

Meanwhile DH was wrapping and has now gone for an Indian takeaway. Because we share the Christmas preparations.

My mother is a horrendous cook so dad does Christmas (and every other meal thank god). In our house we do it together, but then my DP isn't a dick.

Is there a law or something that you have to have sprouts for Christmas dinner in the UK? I'm American and I think I have probably had them twice in my life and never for Christmas.

I never thought of bubble and squeak. The potato will hide the sproutiness.Thanks.

Other half is currently doing an emergency last minute dash to any nearby shop that is still open as people we thought had finally stopped buying us presents phone to say they were just on the way to drop ours off (having asked me if I had bought anything we could recycle)

I would also be interested in the thread about consumerism, I think there's an fascinating debate to be had there about how advertising is targeted. I've been at the mulled wine though, so I can't start it!

Maybe I will start a thread later if I can think of a useful OP. I'm not that good at them....

Why, even when she claimed to be impervious to the marketing forces of Christmas has Lass, yet again, made her annual purchase of brussel sprouts when no one, apart from her (and she is not that keen on them) will eat them. And can anyone suggest a recipe for leftover sprouts?
