Watching old school SS episodes on DVD. Love them but not watched them for several years.

I've never noticed before how male dominated it is.

Not just the main characters all male - Bert, Ernie, Big Bird, Oscar, Grover, Dracula, Cookie Monster but in the cartoon skits the vast majority of animated characters are male. The voice overs - male. I've not seen an animated female character in this episode yet!

The caring images are of course female - girls playing with dolls house, while the kids riding bikes for a day out are the zoo are, you guessed it, boys.

FFS!

There were a lot more female characters in the Muppets than in this episode of Sesame Street.

Miss Piggy, all the chickens, the musician and a good selection of female hosts. But yes most of the main characters in the Muppets were male too.

Kermit was. I think he was the only one though.

Oh yeah sorry I got confused! Were the muppets even on sesame street? I don't think they were.

Technically Miss Piggy is a Muppet.

I think you're right, but there were lots of female characters later on. Prarie Dawn, Zoe. Abby whatsherface.

And Maria has been a main character since the 70's.

I can't remember a female puppet character apart from Miss Piggy actually. Having one girl with a group of boy characters is still quite common today in children's programmes I think.

I do like that they showed a woman breastfeeding though as that is not something which you see today!

Game show skit. 4 male characters one female.

Pretty representative of today's game shows sadly.

It was produced in the 70's. But I grew up watching it. Never once have I thought about the gender balance.

Ah here's a song/video about firemen!
