Another trans woman kills herself in a male prison. Let's look at the real statistics.

The statistics

www.theguardian.com/society/2015/jan/22/prison-suicide-rate-82-deaths

I think this is all we need to know. Why aren't all the other suicides a matter of news headlines?

The piece also stated that no one has any evidence as to why men are more likely just that it is linked masculinity.

Monks live longer. Maybe their suicide rates are also lower?

I have great news for all men who think that their statistically shorter lifespan is unfair! Grin

I have written to the Justice Minister about this issue (review currently underway by MoJ) and started a thread here www.mumsnet.com/Talk/feminist_activism/2525998-Write-to-Caroline-Dineage-Justice-Minister-about-MoJ-Review for anyone interested.

I read a piece in the Times (I never buy a newspaper so don't judge) today (Cosmo Landesman (sp?)) about suicide, and apparently it's a predominantly male activity.
Men kill themselves in considerably greater numbers than women.
So probably not more likely because this person was MtT, but because they are male.
The piece also stated that no one has any evidence as to why men are more likely just that it is linked masculinity.
The rates have risen recently.

Another, unrelated to suicide, but definitely a feminist issue, was that the gender pay gap starts with pocket money.

Hell, i'd be happy with only xy in female spaces, so long as only xx could go in the male spaces!! Bit backwards, but at least we get the 'safe space' back

Considering that men's prisons are bigger, there are more of them, so visiting is easier, etc ... I am all for it.

Could get a bit crowded in the women's prisons, though, if we put all the XY chromosome criminals in there. Wink

To put words in bristol uni's mouths "I'm not saying it, but someone else did and we are so shit scared of trans activists we are running and hiding".

It doesn't need to be proved. They attempted to weasel out of having to provide evidence by saying they weren't calling her a transphobe or anything, it was just that someone else had said it. Utterly pathetic.

Have you seen that Sarah Ditum has been no platformed for being accused of transphobia? Disclaimer - I don't know what "court" judges and proves accusations of transphobia!

Yes, that was a mistake on my part. It's XX chromosomes.

I follow Miranda too, you can't help but wish her well, in the onslaught of obuse that she gets stating that transwomen are male in sex. ( Miranda is transgender)

See, I'd actually have no real problem with Miranda Yardley in a woman's space because I think she really understands what we're talking about and what women's spaces are for. However, I also think that cherry picking individual transwomen and inviting them in can't work.

Just ignore. I've no idea how they got 150,000 signatures.

Only those with xy chromosomes are allowed in female prisons petition.

With the obvious exclusions on the chromosomal scale. AIS (rare, 1 in 20,000 births) being one, Swyer's (1 in 80,000) condition being another.

...perfectly nice transwoman in an office, school, whatever, who wants to use the women's toilets because there are better mirrors, or whatever, that wouldn't be a problem if no one minds...

Yes. Because THAT would at least mean acknowledging that such access is not yours by right, that it does have an effect on others.

Or......you could ask for BETTER mirrors in the gents because some males wear make-up too..............The drag queens would thank you!

If the claim is people are in danger of violence in the male loo/prison etc, then surely the answer is......

sort out the men and their violence!

rather than let everyone hide in the ladies.

Have been following Miranda Yardley on Twitter, and it's fantastic to see a TW saying what we've been saying - that TW and bio women have different experiences and needs. She's been embroiled in a debate with this charmer. Miranda has been saying that the latest (extremely violent) trans prisoner to die In custody had no place in a women's prison.

I just want to scream no your "womanhood" is NOTHING like mine, you narcissist twat, but I don't fancy th death threats

but has lived her entire adult life as a woman (Guardian)

So, living AS a woman includes:

"We also know this because he is an escort offering customers a ‘seven-inch surprise’ on his website." (quoted from Spiked)

You can argue about objective measures (like actually having surgery or having been on hormones) as regards transition, but 'living as a woman', or even just 'identifying AS a woman', these are presumably the measures that some people would like the law changed to reflect.

According to these, I'm NOT a woman, since I neither identify as one (I just AM, being an adult human female), nor do I 'live as one' in the way that it is meant here.

Odd how you add ONE word, and think about 'living as a black woman' something that Rachel Dolezal did quite successfully for quite a few years and it is somehow NOT okay. But remove that one word again, and suddenly it is OKAY and laudable and gets you moved in with the girls...........Despite your ‘seven-inch surprise’.........

There's also the fact that IF there is ONE of those picture-book, perfectly nice transwoman in an office, school, whatever, who wants to use the women's toilets because there are better mirrors, or whatever, that wouldn't be a problem if no one minds and therefore no one reports it.

Legal leverage to get men the hell out of women's spaces is necessary to keep creeps out, no matter how many perfectly nice people there are who should be exempt from the rules.

I am pretty sure no one wants to install cameras to make sure that no man ever, after politely explaining the situation, walks into the ladies' room to change his baby's diapers on the table there, or whatever.

Leaving aside the OBVIOUS risks of letting people who are very visibly not female into a changing room (hint: I'm NOT implying they are necessarily the risk personally), what I think I was aiming at was the fact that I feel relatively comfortable being vulnerable and naked amongst other women because they are the SAME as me. Also naked, also female, the SAME physically/biologically, LIKE me. Some may be stronger than others, some may have had many children, some none, some may have breast implants and breast-feed in public, some may be very flat-chested, ALL varieties and shapes and colours of female.

But a transwoman, no matter how successful the surgery and hormones, isn't LIKE me physically. Hence my comfort in our common vulnerability would be gone.

Hmm Next time I get completely and utterly cunted I'll be sure and say it's my way of dealing with prejudice.

I actually feel sorry for Tara - I don't think she can be a happy person. But the sycophantic reporting of her case is really wearing thin now.

I'll be interesting to see what her customers on Punternet have to say about how she has mended her ways.
