Feminism exposed

Feminism, as I understand it, is about equality. Feminists are allegedly people, predominantly women, who believe men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. This looks good on the surface, that men and women should have equality. But that is not the full story:

If feminists believe in equality, why don't they call themselves equalists? Calling yourself a feminist is implying that you are only focused on women's rights. I've never had a feminist answer this question. If you believe in equality, you should call yourself an equalist, not a feminist. Mothers, in family courts, have more rights than fathers. Yet I've never seen feminists upset or troubled by this. It seems that feminists only focus on women's rights and not men's. So, why not call yourself an equalist?

You got more time and energy than me Dervel, probably more optimism as well.

Organic you're either you didn't ask the question you meant to ask or you are just baiting people. If the latter please ignore me no good will come it.

If by my blind optimism you just need some course correction please examine your phrasing. You make a series of irrelevant suppositions about feminism that "appears" to makes a valid logical statement. You talk about feminists and your potential equalists as one in the same. One would be an equalist (which by definition would make one a feminist or vice versa), and yet choose to focus your efforts on equality for women, and tear down the barriers specifically aimed at keeping women down.

This does not in anyway preclude you from being an equalist either, but there is only so much time in the day, and it makes sense to focus on issues that resonate with you. Besides as a feminist you prevent a marginalization that effects some half the population of the planet, so if I could wave a magic wand and remove one inequality from the world it would be discrimination against women. That isn't to say I don't care about gay rights, racism or any of the others it's just that my one use of the magic wand would be most efficient waved in that direction. IMO, and it is by that belief that people identify as feminists. Feminism does not mean anti-equality, and if you believe it does I am afraid my friend you are in error and need to go away, educate yourself and come back when you know what you are talking about.

Siggy - No. What I mean is that MRAs like this buckethead are so inadequate women won't shag them, therefore they are going to become extinct.

'You are an evolutionary dead end, that's your problem.'

What do you mean? Are you referring to the Y chromosome?

I hate men?!

Oh, now that's news to me. I have loved many men, and my grandfathers, uncles, brother and son are especially closely loved.

Does this mean I'm not a feminist? Sad

I am very fond of quite a few men, and boys, and women, and girls.

I'm less keen on deluded numpties. Perhaps we should fight for equal rights for them, they clearly a persecuted minority.

Ladies are women wot know their place, innit.

That's, it MrsGeologist, you've got it.

I know my place: right now it's in front of the laptop, mumsnetting. That must mean I'm a lady.

Surely after a while your blood sugar returns to normal and you stop being able to blame misogyny on that?

Have some of the lovely Kitteh Cake, maybe a nice hot, sweet Brew

I'm sure if you ask nicely one of the laydeez will scurry along and make you one.

Sadly I can't, I am terribly busy knitting my DH and DSs x2 lovely 'I love feminism' jumpers so that they can be ready for those cold winter demonstrations.

They do like a lovely hand knitted jumper.

Oh god organic100, don't say that, I beg you. You are having such an effect on me with your frightening words, I will become all confused!

Maybe, perhaps... Could you? Could you mansplain it to me? So I can understand and be a real lady? Not like those yucky feminists who don't understand that if only they would do what you say, they'd be happy. All ladies are happy, aren't they, Organic100? And if I'm a good girl and do all the things nice men like you want me to do, I'll be a lady and I can be happy too.

I don't like being a feminist, it's too much for me to worry my pretty little head about.
