I have a £100 Kindle voucher but ds bought me the new Bill Bryson book...can't wait to get started on that one today.

I got Starlight & Storm by Gaston Rebuffat, an actual paper book with pages and everything, from DH who is a Kindlevangelist and thinks paper books are totally pointless!

To be fair it is out of print and not available on Kindle, and I did ask very nicely :) Looking forward to reading it!

I got the latest cazalet chronicle and Mrs Webber's Omnibus by Posy Simmonds, which is so Mumsnet it's not true despite being started in about 1979!!

I got £100 book vouchers and bought myself Beowulf, The Foundation Pit, a book that answers twenty questions about Jane Austen's novels and a memoir of Agatha Christie, a Dorothy Sayers book and a Ngaio Marsh one from the second hand section of the book shop.

I got the bill Bryson one as a gift and also got a new kindle.

I've just finished the night circus by Erin morgensten which was amazing.

I also got the 100 year old man who climbed out of the window for 99p ad throughout enjoyed it.

Will be watching this with interest, amazon keeps recommended the goldfinch but it didn't catch my attention, but reading this thread I might give it a try.

I haven't read The Luminaries yet but I'd recommend The Goldfinch.

I read a Tale for the Time Being earlier this year and loved it. I gave myself the Goldfinch but was also given a lot of books this Christmas by family. I can't decide whether to start the Goldfinch or The Luminaries tonight. Any views?

TurnOffTheTv - I read Greenbanks earlier in the year and enjoyed it. I got They Were Sisters by Dorothy Whipple after seeing it recommended on here.

I got Kiss Me First by Lottie Moggach, which has been very good so far (just over halfway through). It's a bit of an odd one that I had been ignoring as it sounded like one of those romance books where someone dies. It's nothing like that and I'm very keen to find out what happens in the end.

I also got Dust by Hugh Howey, which I'm pleased about as I loved Wool and Shift.

The Silent Wife by ASA Harrison, which I think is a crime fiction book.

The Other Typist by Suzanne Rindell, which I've had wish listed for a while.

And A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki, about someone who finds a diary washed up following a tsunami.

If you've not read Miranda Hart's book I really really recommend that. I have borrowed it from a pal and it's brilliant.

I loved The Dinner. I also have Tigers in Red Weather by my bed.

Really enjoying the Bill Bryson....a lot about transatlantic flights, but some really interesting stuff about Babe Ruth and Herbert Hoover.

The Goldfinch. Brilliant book.

Also got given a selection of nice classics (six books, I won't list them as they aren't particularly exciting reads and are also staples of any classics book selection) which are quite boring imo, but they're good for a nice read before bedtime, or, for the heavier two, a read when I have a lot of time on my hands and nothing to do. They'll be very useful when in waiting rooms, I'm sure.

LadySnapcase, I had a dictionary like that and another book (can't remember what it was, it wasn't particularly good anyway). With the dictionary, my mum wrote to OED who replaced it.
