Everyone has been slating the choice of Anne Hathaway as Emma, but who do you picture would be better?

I dont know why, but I always picture the woman that played Claire in Corrie, and Shane west from ER as Dex (and I know he is American, and not posh, but thats who I see in my head).

I have only just read the book and have not seen the film but I have to say I also thought Kate Winslett, but probably because I pictured Emma Morley as being about like Hester in Enigma

Everyone goes on about the accent thing and AH not sounding properly Yorkshire, now I have not seen the film so don't know how bad it is, but it occurs to me that a young Yorkshire woman who spends most of her adult life in London would sound considerably less Yorkshire as time goes by. People's accents do become less pronounced when they move away from where they were born. Hence, it might have been a bit unrealistic if she had been played with a strong Yorkshire accent all the way through

I couldn't picture Dex at all but I could see Alexander Armstrong as Ian

Kelly MacDonald would be fab. She was great in No Country For Old Men.

Kelly McDonald. I think she 'looks' like Emma and is a fab actress. Not nearly enough box-office-bankability though Sad

I've just finished reading it (haven't seen the film), and in my mind it was Andrea Riseborough and Stephen Moyer. Couldn't get their faces out of my head.

Perhaps too pretty for Emma? She wasn't portrayed as a 'looker' was she?

Rebecca Hall would have nailed it. I thought Dex was well cast.

Emma's a tough one, isn't she? I know AH's accent wasn't great - having said that, at times it was spot on but at other times was too posh. It was a bit all over the place really. Visually though, and personality wise, I think AH was perfect for Emma. She's very versatile in as much that she had to look really young at the start of the film and age with the character, which I think she did really well. The only British actress I could think of who could possibly have pulled Emma off is Gemma Arterton, as others have said. I can't see Kate Winslet in the role at all. What about one of the British lasses that have been in period dramas such as Downton Abbey? For example that girl (no idea of her name) in Downton Abbey (played a kitchen maid) who was in Corrie quite a few years ago? Similar to the Claire Peacock actress.

Yes, it is worth seeing the film - I enjoyed it despite Anne Hathaway's dodgy accent!

Dex was fab exactly right and as for em it would have to be Ann Marie duff...she's just right...but never mind them...what about the mother and the lack of the headteacher!!!!

Yy, Gemma Arterton or Romola Garai would have been better.

What about Andrea Riseborough? From Newcastle I think but I bet she could do Leeds accent. She was great in Party Animals and she's done a few US movies.
