Is it ever going to get cold!?

I'm still waiting for a proper winter...
Not necessarily snow, but frosty mornings and actual days where you wrap up to go outside. It's been a bit of a let down so far for me!

Anyone know if we're heading for a cold spell?
Thanks.

OP I'm with you. Can't wait for a decent cold snap, though if it's sunny & cold, the heat from the sun on the patio doors in our living room means it feels all wrong to light the woodburner until dusk...

Only yesterday I was moaning about all the midges flying in my face when out walking the dog - a good few frosts would kill them off. As well as flu/cold germs.

And I find drizzle, grey skies and 14 deg very depressing on Xmas day...though it'd serve me right if we get snowed in (will never happen) before this baby arrives, currently 38+2 Xmas Wink

Not fair that it is colder in the south, that is not how it should be. We pay extortionate prices for housing just for the mild and sunny climate Angry. Our electricity prices are more expensive too.

Last night the 10 degrees went down to 6, the mildest this week .

I'm on the south coast and it's bloody freezing here. Why is it warmer in Scotland? Is that what climate change is going to do? I'll have to move up north

I'm with you Northern you crass, unfeeling rotter, you

Cold winters are good for gardens, agriculture and pest control. And like Kitten, in my unheated house I way prefer bright cold days when the sun shines through the windows and warms things up.

Last year we were being SWAMPED by rain, remember? It was about 13 degrees in general, before Christmas. Then in the New Year it got cold, and warm until about June :)

Unfortunately those in Scotland have rather more to worry about than the cold this weekend weather warnings.
Mild weather at this time of year often comes with the price of storms.

I guess there's always going to be some people who take things the wrong way! Ap

My OP really was just questioning whether we're due some cold and frosty mornings. I agree its more cheerful to look out on frosty trees and blue skies than grey dismal ones.

I have my hot water bottle to take to bed tonight so i'll be happy with that.

Don't take it to heart, Northern.

I'm one of those poor saps that can't afford heating oil this winter, and I'm certainly wishing for snow and frost.

Thing is, winter's 'cold' anyway. Whether it's 7 degrees outside, or -7, it's still not warm enough to do without heating. So I'd rather look at white than grey.

NB: I have a woodburner and am steadily scrumping wood so am not, truthfully, freezing at this moment. I DO miss hot water though.

Why do you want cold weather? Are your energy bills not high enough, or perhaps you don't have to worry about paying the bills? Either way, the cold weather can stay the fuck away afaiac.

WE had a real peasouper here in Essex this morning!

I'm happy for it never to get cold. Will nobody think of my geraniums?!

whereisthewitch ~ the metoffice's summary for December 2012 is here. Does sound similar to what's happening this month.

After getting up to 7.3C today, the temperature's dropped quite quickly here (Leicester) and we're down to 1.5C. Think we might get a slight frost tonight.

Wasn't it like this last year and then we had snow in April?

I definitely prefer mild winters but I also love a frosty Christmas, OP I don't think you are crass or unthinking.

It was actually a proper below freezing frost for us last night, and it's been a gorgeous day. Apparently it's foggy a mile further inland.

Horrible and foggy all day today. 0 in the night and 4.9 degrees top during the day.

At the moment in Edinburgh, we're not even getting any real temp change between night and day. 10C last night. Am finding it really hard to believe that school breaks up for Xmas next week. Maybe winter is late and the cold will start in Jan?

I'm happy for it to stay warmer as I cycle ten miles to work and back and need to keep energy bills down.

-1 last night and +7 top during the day. Not mild but not freezing during the day. Was very misty first thing and thought it would be sunny. But no, it was murky and dismal.

I think I read that the sun's not strong enough for Vit D production, till about April in Scotland. However brightness would be nice. Has seemed murky for all of our 8 hours of daylight today. And for all it's problems, snow brightens up the place in the middle of winter.
