First off - DISCLAIMER I don't mind if you give your baby purees, I just don't. And I am sure that there are some good HVs out there.

OK, so just been to baby clinic (mostly to get them to display some posters for Lulumama's baby day at Ormskirk hospital) and, guess what, she has dropped down the centiles.

So I got quizzed on how weaning is going, surprise that I wasn't giving her formula but still exclusively b/feeding.

Nearly pmsl, kept a straight face and asked 'Oh - I thought that bm had more calories than solids?' I was then instructed to feed her petit filou.

Everybody come and hold my hand please.

Dearie me. I had never heard of BLW til I came on MN. 12 years ago I was told to start DD on babyrice (at 3 months). Gave her crusts and things to pick up when she was a bit older...

Still not certain what it is. Suffice to say, in 8 mths time, when my bump is being weaned (after 6 mths I've picked that up - I might just keep my mouth shut!

"give her petit filou"

Quote of the week?
I know its not from a mumsnetter but still.

i must be the only person whose HV has never nosed about weaning. i was asked once- 'Does he eat well?', i said yes, end of discussion. Just smile and nod and then ignore her.

and on the petit filou- i have spent ages looking at different yogurts to check ingredients, and they all have sugar or other delights. I just give DS plain greek yogurt, and he loves it. But then i also let him eat a Jaffa Cake last week, so i should probably be shot by the food police.

DS's nursery gave him a Petit Filou after his lunch the other week, and then some more because he was still hungry apparently. Poor mite was sick all evening. I now take in an organic, sugar-free fruit yogurt for him - think it might be the "Little Dish" ones actually. Much better - DS would still have had no added sugar at all if it wasn't for that bl**dy PF.

I've binned my PF.....

I have to puree everything though as DS gags at the slightest lump...have tried and tried to get him to eat a little more solid food but when I see his little red face and eyes watering, I dash back to the kitchen and puree my heart out!!

Hmm might not have had the same alliteration but might have avoided sounding like you were just wanting to have a dig at purees for weaning by tying a crap HV to purees. Although to be fair, it actually wasn't the title that did that so much as the disclaimer!

Report
Stookoopagoomtree · 21/03/2007 17:13

I'm not looking for an argument, really. Just being pedantic. Wouldn't want the OP to think the disclaimer had worked when it didn't, in case she wants to use it again .

How many times have we seen the same scenario with a HV described in BF forums as a problem with a HV not trusting BF, or just being dairy-happy or formula-happy or weight-obsessed? Now suddenly it's described as a problem with a HV pushing "purees". But what's new? Nothing in the actual scenario. Maybe something in what we see as the thing that puts distance between our parenting and the mainstream, and therefore the thing that the HV must be on the other side from? I don't know, but it's interesting (maybe just to me).

I was calling her a puree pusher because

a. I know she is, I went to the weaning party for the freebies

b. She pushes solids (purees in her case) if your baby isn't following the centiles

Weaning-pusher just didn't have the same alliteration.

I was equally concerned that she was pushing more and more solids as a route to weight gain as I was with the whole petit filou thing.

But I knew that if I mentioned the PF comment then Hunker would come and join the party, and Hunker can be fun (as can QV)

Stook, I think you are looking for an argument that just isnt there.

Nikki76, normal greek yogurt with some mashed up banana (or other fruit) is much nicer than petit filous. Cheaper too, I think.

Stookoopagoomtree · 21/03/2007 16:58

I think we should be told.

I just found it odd that the OP was characterising the HV as an example of a "puree-pusher", when in fact she seems clearly to have been something slightly different, i.e. an "'effin petit-filou pusher"! Plenty of people who've pureed their socks off would equally not see Petit Filous as some kind of wonderfully dairy-full calorific superfood the way this HV seemed to; and I'm sure equally some people who wouldn't touch a puree with plastic Tommee Tippee weaning bargepole might see Petit Filous as fab foods for a baby to eat themselves with a spoon. So where does this puree-Petit Filou connection come from?

Report
Nikki76 · 21/03/2007 16:51

arghh....I give DS petit filous and I read the label - is it that bad????

Can I give him normal greek yoghurt with some mashed up banana instead?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 21/03/2007 16:46

Excellent

I read it as the OP calling HV's puree pushers.

oh i see, you're maybe interpreting it as anyone who feeds puree is a puree-pusher by virtue of using a spoon etc... hmmmm, that's not how i read it, really. but i can see how you would be offended if that was the case. which i don't think it is.

AitchYouBerk · 21/03/2007 16:33

ROFL nobiggy. that is genius.

and i definitely thought that the OP was directed at her puree-pushing HV, not people who feed their children puree.
