Onion powder

I've noticed a few recipes, especially involving things like jackfruit, call for it but I've never seen it in any high street shops, only advertised to buy online. Supermarkets sell onion granules but I'm assuming that's something different?

Found it in an Asian shop just round the corner. All that time wondering where to find it.

Tesco sell it to, as others have said it’s just a fine powered so granules would do the same job

Asian/oriental/Turkish supermarkets will have it & Flying Tiger sell it too.

Granules won't work quite the same. They'll give flavour, but don't have thickening property, unlike the powder

Check the ethnic shelf. Otherwise just the granules, they are the same stuff, just a little coarser.

Bizarrely enough I was just reading a Facebook post about being unable find onion powder and the difference between that and onion granules.

Someone posted this pic of alternatives to use but ultimately the consensus was to just use the granules as the come or grind them down to powder if you could be bothered.

There is onion powder in Bisto, but it's mostly potato flour and wheat flour. We pour potatoes on our potatoes.

I’m pretty sure they sell this in Sainsburys -in the herb/spice/salt dept.

Onion granules have always worked fine for me. I’ve used them in lots of recipes.

There's roast jackfruit and jackfruit burger recipes I want to try that call for it. Perhaps I'll try the granules first rather than sending off for something online.

There are several onion products which are similar. Onion powder is very fine and powder like. I've found it in Asian/Indian food stores. The one I recently got was good, but it was in a plastic packet and soon became moist in our kitchen and is now a hard lump!

Onion granules I've found in many supermarkets and more versatile IMO as often come in a re-sealable glass jar. They are slightly more granule than the powdered version, and more like fine salt in terms of texture, but used for the exact same purposes as the powder form.

Fried onions are different again, fried in oil and often use as a garnish in salads and Thai/Vietnamese cooking.

bisto powder (the old fashioned stuff, not the granules) is mainly onion powder - and contains no meat

I just use the onion granules from the supermarket, seems to work fine.
