Can anyone recommend a self catering place on/right next to a beach, maybe in Devon or Cornwall?

Please! Have been googling with no joy. Plenty of time as thinking of next year [organised] . Ideally would like somewhere which backs straight onto a beach (pebbly or sandy) or is right next to a beach, not too busy, and no pets allowed (bad experience of pet houses in the past). 2 bedrooms ideal, anything involving toddler toys would be perfect not not expected.

Realise this is a specific wishlist, I just can't find anywhere with the right location from my online searches. We have one holiday a year and I'm already hankering to next year so need something to look forward to. We don't even mind going to other places - Suffolk, Norfolk, Dorset, Isle of Wight etc. I know mn can be ace on these things [hopeful]

I gather the helicopter service has stopped; there's the SkyBus and Scillonian III. However, if you wouldn't be happy travelling between islands either, then I guess Scilly isn't the ideal destination for you.

It's the sea travel I'm scared of blue (which also concerns me re: travelling between islands). I could be OK with the helicopter, but if the weather is too bad I believe they stop the helicopter and you have to go by boat instead

Am advised by friends who went to Scilly this summer that the boat is now WAY cheaper than the plane. But is it sea or air travel you don't like, Reastie?

Wow christ that right there is where I want to stay! It's too ££ though :( We could do a week there and afford it, but it's too far to drive for one week so we'd need 2.

Bit pricey but try Seaspray in Carbis Bay, deck at the back opens onto the beach, stunning!!

I like the self catering villas at the Porth Veor Hotel which overlooks Porth Bay. ( we always request the same villa which opens out onto the pool and has a balcony too)

There are I think 8 villas sharing a nice pool ( enclosed and locked overnight so safe for toddlers) .No sea view from the villas but the fantastic beach is accessed from the garden of the hotel. They also have a couple of self catering properties right next to the beach too.

Close to Newquay and yet it feels a whole world away at the same time!

We've stayed there four times , three Easter breaks and one summer holiday. We absolutely love it.

I think there are currently only six properties that you can book at Gara of a total of about 20, the others are for sale and currently empty (they are V expensive so think they might be for sale for a while!) which means when we stayed we were the only people using the swimming pool which was fab. The restaurant is open to the public (lots of walkers pass by) but the rest of the place is for people staying only. It is remote (by car there is almost 20 minutes of lanes from Kingsbridge), and the beach is wild with no lifeguard etc. but we really loved it.

I've also ear-marked this one nearby Hallsands- and looks like it's right on the beach.

Try Hope Cove in Devon - there is a row of old coastguard cottages by the beach

shriley I had looked at that property with HH but only discounted it as it wasn't clear how many of those houses there were there, and I was worried out of the photo there'd be loads of other properties not shown which have use of pool too?? The beach there looks lovely and secluded.

numberfaker thanks for that site, it looks good. I keep hearing about gorran haven when I look for places so I can't decide if that's as it's great and we should go or if it's very busy and touristy and so should avoid.

deux I have had a nose on NT but didn't like the small photo's on their site and not showing every room (I sound fussy don't I?!) and generally the site not very user friendly so gave up on it. The did have some wonderfully placed properties though. The Mill Cottage position looks amazing.

Have a look at National Trust cottages. We've stayed in several and never been disappointed. You can search their site for cottages near a beach. Don't be put off if any of them are dog friendly. We've never noticed. These are a couple we've stayed in.

I'm currently staying at //www.hawkes-point.co.uk. The beach is literally 2 mins walk. It's a lovely sandy bay (Carbis Bay).

The railway station is also round the corner and it's a 3 min journey to St Ives.

The accommodation is lovely. Quality fixtures, fittings and furniture. A fab sea view. Secure parking, wifi, bathrobes, toiletries etc.

I would highly recommend this accommodation and I'm really picky.

The Park at Mawgan Porth is lovely. Not right on the beach but only a 5 to 10 minute walk along a flat road to a big sandy beach.

I've stayed here with Helpful Holidays. Its remote but easy to get to Salcombe and you get use of the lovely swimming pools and good restaurant on site and the beach is a short walk down the coastal path (bit of a climb back up though). We plan to return.

We were there in term-time rather than full-summer but just for a long weekend and we spent most of the time at the beach so didn't do much exploring further afield. The beach was, I'd say "medium" busy in that there were plenty of people there but it was easy enough to find a space for our stuff that wasn't too close to anyone else (unlike really crowded beaches where your mats overlap the next family's mats and you're all tripping over each other), and there were good facilities at the edge of the beach in terms of shop, cafe, loos, footwashing standpipes etc.

Nearby you've got Chichester which has some fun stuff to do, and Arundel Castle is not far away. I remember seeing posters up for various family days out but I didn't pay much attention to what they were exactly. I think it would make a great base for a family holiday.

Found a nice place on the beach at West Wittering Fish and it's closer to us so we could go for a week there easily . Does the beach get very busy? Is there much to do tourist wise in the area? (especially in wet weather). Sorry for being lazy asking, figure you'd know having been there.

Look around West Wittering - we camped at a campsite at the eastern end of the town, and had to walk along westwards to where the proper sandy beach was - and the public footpath led along the backs of a long row of houses which all backed right onto the beach and many of them looked really lovely. About half of them had little plaques up giving details of the lettings companies that hire them out for holidays. The beach there is really fab too.

Lots of chalets would put me off spa but a few might not be too bad . I have dismissed places just because there are multiple self catering lets on the same farm/grounds, but maybe I have to get over it.
