I'm taking my mum to Edinburgh for the weekend - can anyone recommend nice places to go (shopping, touristy things) and places that are good for food/wine in an evening - places that are fairly relaxed but lively enough to feel like we're 'out' IYKWIM... All suggestions gratefully received - thanks.

I wrote a big post and mumsnet ate it Sad

So, the short version... my favourite eating/drinking places in Edinburgh:

  • The Outsider
  • Divinos, amazing if either of you like wine
  • The Grainstore, great value lunch menu
  • Monteiths
  • Second Centotre for drinks (the breakfast is also lovely), prefer upstairs in valvona on multrees walk for food
  • The Dome, must see if christmas decorations are up
  • Take a wander to Stockbridge for some independant shops etc, lovely wee cocktail bar called the raconteur hidden in the streets behind
  • Treacle for lunch

I'm risking being totally outed by the above list...

Try for a ghost tour on the high street as those are fun. Harvey Nicks have a good nail bar and chocolate lounge x

Coffee in the Valvona coffee shop on the 5th floor of Jenners have walked through the beautiful building it is housed in. This has a great view of the castle and Princes Street. All my other ideas are tied in to being taken by my Granny on the bus from Bathgate into the city many, many times as a child.

George Street is great for a stroll - go into Centrotre for a glass of prosecco - or even better an Aperol-Prosecco

For lunch - Pearces on Leith Walk is casual and fun but great food.

The National Galleries definitely worth a visit, and you can take a stroll through the gardens and see the flower clock.

You get a great view of the city from Harvey Nicks cafe so that is good for afternoon tea.

Just above the Grassmarket!

Definitely try to get over to the other side of town as well. Go over to the New Town and down to the Botanics if you have time.

Oh fab, thanks. We're staying at Lauriston Place so near the Grassmarket I think (?)

Sooo many, you'll have no trouble filling the time. Go to the Museum of Scotland on Chamber Street - gorgeous. Go shopping in the Grassmarket/Victoria Street then go to Harvey Nichols.

Loads and loads of good places to eat. Where are you staying?
