DH washed a non dishwasher safe mug in the dishwasher. Might have done it before too! I only realised when I emptied it this time.

Stupidly, I put it at the back of the cupboard and was going to tell the kids what he had done as it’s one of their mugs.
Found out today one of the kids used it!
Bit of an anxiety sufferer. Will they be ok?

Does anyone know why you can’t put a non dishwasher Safe mug in microwave? Worried about release of nasty stuff into their drink.

It is one of those football tea mugs with logo on the front and in the team colour - nice and shiny.

Thank you for help and support. Much appreciated.

Non dishwasher safe means you run the risk of it breaking or discolouring not that it might poison your kids

With kindness, I'd look closer at your anxiety

It's OK OP, your anxiety can stand down on this one, your kids will be absolutely fine 🙂

The cautionary warning is there to prevent the mug getting damaged or dilapidated, not for human health reasons. I think the same applies to microwaves, to protect both the vessel and the appliance.

The worst that would happen is that the design might chip off. Basically they can't guarantee the design of it goes through the dishwasher so they say not safe.
It won't do anyone any harm

We’ve done it a few times and come to no harm. I think its just that the design on the cup can come off.

It’s definitely your anxiety talking, not any real risk. Don’t worry. 💐

It's probably just because the logo was cheaply put on and it'll wash away.
If it was me I'd think there was probably some sort of industry standard to say Dishwasher Safe that they were too cheap too splurge for it.
There's nasty things in the environment alright, but there's no mug ingredients so toxic that it would effect anyone in such tiny quantities. It's possible that cumulatively, in concentration, that there are adverse affects, of course. But the human body is well able to deal with small amounts of undesirable material, and in this case it would be very small amounts indeed, even if they were harmful at all in the first place.
I have had some battles with anxiety myself so know how some things can get a hold of you - but looking at things as rationally as you can is the best way to get through these wobbles

I think manufacturers err on the side of caution with these 'non safe' labels. I have got some plastic beakers that are supposed to not go in the dishwasher. They're just bog standard kids' beakers so I think it's a bit weird!

All the best with the therapy. I have had similar support for my anxiety and have found it helpful 🌻

The logo on the front of the mug will gradually get washed off if you continue to put it in the dishwasher but still perfectly safe to use.
I was gifted a mug for my 40th birthday that said "fabulous at 40". I put it in the dishwasher by accident and now it just says "40". I guess I'm not fabulous after all Confused.
As for the microwave, they don't like anything metallic so if it's got any gold or silver coloured details on the design then that would make it unsuitable for the microwave.
