Spooky Halloween Thread 2021

I haven't noticed a 2021 Halloween thread yet so thought I'd start us off. My life has been pretty dull spooky wise (hence the love of these threads) so I just have a semi-spooky story to share.

A few years ago my then boyfriend and I were driving to his parent's for a long weekend. We were driving on a road through a rural wooded area. It was a cold late night, late autumn time and it felt a bit 'off'. Boyfriend and I were chatting away about the weekend ahead and then we started to notice lights in the woods on either side of the road. First I saw one tiny what looked like a small light, which I dismissed, then another, then another, then 2-3, then several, then 20-30, then maybe 50. We were saying to each other, are you seeing this? 'Yes' we both agreed. Boyfriend started to slow down and when looking closer we could see the lights were candles people were holding and the people were wearing hooded robe type things. They seemed to just be standing in the woods, facing the road (on either side of the road) and their mouths were moving but our car windows were up so we didn't hear nor did we want to hear what they were saying. It freaked us right out and boyfriend sped up the car and we drove away as quickly as possible. 50 lights soon turned to 20-30 and then eventually back to one again. They seemed very evenly spaced out which just made it all the more creepy. There must have been 250+ people or so in total?
I have no idea what that was about. Not spooky as such but very odd and creepy.

I'm from Ireland, and when I was younger, myself, my parents and my three siblings went most summers to a really lovely part of the country, Donegal, to stay in a house or cottage for a week. We couldn't afford foreign holidays but also loved it there.
When I was about 15, we stayed in a big house near Donegal Town, and something about the place really gave me the creeps and had me on edge. It was really eerie and it felt like you were always being watched. I literally slept with the lights on!
It wasn't till we were going home I asked my brother if he noticed anything odd about the house, and he said that during the night he would see a black figure in his bedroom!! How he stayed in the room I don't know!!
It turned out the house we stayed in was the old Courthouse, which had been converted into three houses.
The whole atmosphere of the place was just really creepy and weird.

@custardbear - yes we did, but she just pointed and said "That" - so matter -of-factly! Then she went back to reading, as if it had gone.

I used to work in a school which had a very unsettling store room , with four or five steps leading up to it. (It was a Victorian building - around 1888) Sometimes you would get a sense of something in there and you would just have to get out quickly as the feeling was so unpleasant.
One day I was sitting in the area by the stairs with a four year old. She stopped reading with me and started staring at the stairs, unable to take her eyes off something. It went on for some time, then a TA, who had noticed, came and stood in front of her, which blocked her view. She promptly leaned to the side and carried on looking at something.
When we asked her what she was looking at, she pointed to the stairs and said, "That."

What next? Did you ask her what it was? That's very spooky

I always walk my dog around the village between 8-9pm. I have never had any problems. This time of the year it's dark at that time and the village has few street lights so it is very dark when out walking. We walked along our normal route along some houses, around the green and then down along a road. The road is usually busy and at one point the foothpath goes away from the road a bit so there is a tree and a couple of shrubs between you and the road and then a couple of trees and some shrubs on the other side of you. Walking through that section takes about 2 minutes then the footpath goes back to being along the road. As I was walking towards the section that briefly goes away from the road I suddenly felt someone very quickly rush up behind me and whisper in my ear either 'Hellloo' or 'Gooo'. The voice was a man's voice, it felt very dark and evil and it firmly whispered in my left ear. I could actually feel the breath of someone whispering in my ear and the presence of someone standing right behind me. My whole body started tingling telling me to LEAVE NOW! I started to jog off with my dog and looking around. I didn't see anything or anyone around me but I felt that their was a 'dark presence' which stayed in that one spot as I jogged away but I also felt that I was being watched the whole way home and that my thoughts were being 'heard'. I can't explain it and I haven't had that happen before or since.

My Irish grandmother used to tell us about a story that her great uncle told her. He was walking back to the cattle byre to give them a nightime feed, and suddenly a 7 foot tall man, dressed in what he described as glass appeared beside him. He glided alongside them at the byre, turned and said "feed them well" and disappeared. We were always told he was one of the Sidhe, but now it sounds more like an alien encounter

Have a Google and see if there have been any sightings in your area. I think it's fascinating. Maybe it jumped into a tree and was checking you out. Or maybe it was a demon I think I'd take the big cat.

Oh wow that's a thought. There used to be lots of supposed big cat sightings in this area about 20 years ago but I haven't heard of any for a long long time.

I was thinking more along the lines of a goddamn demon of some sort but a big cat roaming round near my house would be just as bad!

@Harlequin1088 have you looked into big cats in the UK? One of the distinctive characteristics is the green eye shine seen at night. Interesting section on Ramblings on radio 4 about it recently. Could explain it! I saw one a few years ago.

I've got lots of stories but one that plays on my mind is this one. It must have been around the year 2006 and I was on a night out with my best mate. No drugs taken, we had been drinking but at this point we had eaten food and were starting to sober up. We were in town and for some reason decided to wander around and ended up on a main road. We had been walking for about ten minutes down this road when I saw what I can only describe as a giant's house. It looked like it was on a hillside, but it all looked bigger than it should. It was absolutely massive, like the size of a 6 storey house or something, but only 3 floors. Strangest of all, the front was missing, like it had been sliced horizontally, so that the inside of it the house was visible.
The inside was a mansion, filled with antique furniture but it looked like nature had taken over and twisted tree trunks were growing around the inside. Me and my mate were both just staring at it saying what the hell is that. Then I said " I've got a bad feeling, let's go home". We turned back and went home.
The next day, curiosity got the better of us and we went into town and went searching for it. It was close to a local landmark so should have been easy to find. But no. It wasn't there. In its place were office buildings. Several times I've gone past there and always try to place where it might have been bulldozed but it's all office buildings on that strip of road that have been there years. And my friend has no memory of it, but at the time, I know she saw it.

@beedoorknocker With difficulty! I don't tend to go in there after dark any more but even during the day I often feel uneasy.

My great aunt Christina died in 1926 when she was 14 and she's been spotted in the family cottage where she grew up. In the front parlour you get the sense that you are being watched. When Christina's last sibling died on the 90s the cottage was rented out and the medical professionals living there reported strange things happening so the family got a spirit guide in. She said there were two spirits there - supposedly Christina and her last surviving sister. The sister wouldn't leave Christina who was too scared to move on. Anyway the woman encouraged them to leave and there were no problems in the cottage after that.

This is like the hooded robes I saw. Dark, with no pointy heads and a bit of faces exposed. It was very eery in the pitch black with candle light and then of course the sheer number of them on either side the road.

LordEmsworth Thanks for sharing! That sounds similar but my incident happened in the US. The robes I saw were dark (black?) with the hooded part pulled just over the head with the faces exposed but due to the poor lighting and shadows I couldn't specifically identify someone. I could see their mouths moving together but I've no idea what they were saying. It felt very dark and we guess satanic worship but I could be completely wrong on that. My instincts were telling me to get away quickly.

One of my cats often likes to accompany the dog and I on our evening walk.

A few years ago, it was autumn and the sun had set at about 4pm so it was dark by the time the dog and I set out for our evening walk. Cat met us on the front porch and the three of us set off together. Rural area with no street lights so the dog and I wear matching hi-viz jackets and I always have a head torch on to see where we're going.

The loop we take brings us through a little bit of woodland. Nothing particular scary as I go through those trees with the dog several times a day so know the area very well.

As we came back towards the house on the last little stretch of woodland, the cat appeared to have wandered off (not uncommon as he often hears small creatures rustling in the undergrowth and goes to investigate) and I was starting to wonder where he'd gone when my head torch picked up the green glow of a pair of eyes just up ahead.

"There he is", I thought, and carried on walking towards the eyes. At that moment, the dog stopped stock still and started to shake. I felt something twirling around my ankles and looked down to find the cat there.

When I glanced back up, I realised that despite the cat being with me, the eyes in the distance were still there and now that I had gotten closer, I could see that the eyes were at least 6 foot off the ground.

Well I don't think I've ever moved so fast in my life. Both dog and cat were keen to get out of there and the three of us legged it home, slammed the door behind us and spent all night with every light in the house burning.

I never found out what those eyes belonged to but I get a chill down my spine every time I walk through those woods.

Like something is watching.
