Child to TA ratio

I believe the ratio to staff and children is 1:13. But would it be acceptable for a TA to be fully responsible for 60 kids for 5 minutes in a playground at the end of each lunch? Children are in years Reception and Year 1.

Yes

There isn't anything that says it's unacceptable.

Teacher to pupil ratio in reception/year 1 is 1:30. But there's no rule that the ratio is this at all times. However, the school is required to have sufficient supervision at all times. 1:60 might be fine or might no, depending on needs of the children, shape of the playground, etc, etc.

If you're being asked to do this and are concerned, do speak to someone. Having said that, 1:60 is our standard ratio for playtime duty (20 mins), so it seems normal to me.

These kids are in 2 different playgrounds with only 1 TA. Lots of SEN.
Anyway thanks everyone for their input seems it's not ideal but normal

It doesn't seem that unusual to me: we have 2 members of staff on duty at break time for approx 200 children

I wouldn't be happy with that. We have split KS1/KS2 lunch times and we have 4 members of staff out at each one, so approx 90 children to 4 staff in one playground and we are still run off our feet!
