Results day dread

Well this has kicked in for me. It doesn't matter how long I've been teaching, how old I get, how many set of results I have under my belt, every year it's the same. Two weeks prior to results day I have a deep, sick dread feeling in the pit of my stomach about results. I become irritable and on edge. It's ludicrous.

I know I did all I could to support my students and went above and beyond. I'm sure they would agree that I have been a supportive and effective teacher.

But it doesn't make me worry any less.

I don't teach a core subject and nor do I teach in a school who overly scrutinise individual teacher's results. This dread is wholly of my own making.

I wish I wasn't like this. I wish I could control my anxiety about results.

A-level were as predicted and faculty as a while we're decent so quite happy with that.

Still dreading next week though - my GCSE group weren't good and we have had a very unstable few years. This year was a lot more stable so fingers crossed we can now start to make improvements and really focus on teaching and learning rather than fire fighting!

How did everyone get in today? Hope it went well!

Ours were far, far better than we thought - absolutely over the moon today!

I barely slept last night and had a very vivid dream where I logged on, checked the results and they were crap. By 5:57am I’d convinced myself that they were going to be even worse than the dream because I kept remembering kids saying ‘I haven’t started revising yet’ or homework that hadn’t been handed in. OMG why didn’t I mark more past papers?? I had top set so my results would be quite visible iykwim, people counting the 9s.

Then I logged in and they were fab. I’m so pleased! Might be able to relax a bit for the rest of the holiday now.

I’m pleased noble . I always rate what you have to say and I’m so glad that such a committed and pragmatic teacher has these results from their pupils.
The rest of the holiday’s yours.
Hope everyone else is ok too.

Aw thanks Grundy!

Wine to any teachers getting results today.

Can any of the dedicated teachers on here advise realistically the chance of grades going down if we ask for a re mark. Dd missed a grade by 2 marks. Her mock in the same subject was substantially higher which is why I’m thinking it’s worth to do but her school keep emphasising to parents grades could go down after re marks.
Can anyone offer any help or insight? Many Thanks!
Congrats to all the teachers surviving results day, I can’t begin to imagine having to worry about 20+ students Confused

Our best results so far. From Entry Level 3 to grade 4, which sounds pretty rubbish, but actually represents huge progress.

It would depend on the subject and how far you are away from the lower grade boundary.

Maths doesn’t tend to change by more than a mark if at all. I seem to remember a thread last year about English reviews of marking (they don’t do remarks any more) where they seemed to change quite a lot.

Nice work noble! It's always nerve-wracking to be high profile. I'm the only Maths teacher, so it's my default!

@noblegiraffe- thanks for responding.
It’s RS. She is 2 marks away from a 9
Her mock was 94% which is why we were thinking to try?

And congrats on helping your students achieve great results💐

arewe you need to find the grade boundaries as a starting point. At the top end they can be narrow so losing 5 or 6 marks could shunt a candidate down
Certainly in English marks have sometimes gone up by a large amount.

To be entirely truthful I'd take any mock grades with a pinch of salt. The rank order in a class or school is probably fairly accurate but the grades are pure guesswork. The marking itself might also have been over generous.

That said I'd always be inclined, bearing in mind the grade boundary caveat, to give it a punt : which is why the affluent still stand to profit on our system, she mutters darkly.

Ps I can count on the fingers if one hand how many remarks I know of that have affected a grade downwards!

I was in the first year of a reformed GCSE and one new to the school, to boot. Was particularly anxious that my top student would have her brilliance recognised and I hadn't somehow cocked it all up . She got a 9 and there were 6 further 7s and 8s and only two below 4 .All this in a mixed attainment class. Hooray!

The English results are best not spoken of.

I was utterly dreading today - I taught 75 of our year 11s, and had a year 11 form. I think I slept about 2 hours last night!

The kids in my form who put in the work all got amazing results and I could have cried I was so proud of them, and my top set class got 50% grades 8-9. Plus one of the kids in my 'lower' set only went and got a bloody 8, so made up for them! Now off for a wine and a very long sleep, before I start worrying about year 10. Wine

@Piggywaspushed
Thank you !! Grade boundary for 9 is 119 she achieved 117. Grade boundary for 8 is 109 so was hoping it wouldn’t go down 8 marks if we requested a re mark and it was negative!

Congratulations on your results today :)

I was delighted. Six 9s in my mixed ability class of 28, thirteen grades 7-9 and only four of them got below a 4. They worked so incredibly hard for those grades and were an absolute pleasure to teach. I had an absolute ball over the 2 years and couldn’t have been prouder.
I feel very lucky to work in the school I do.

Tripe set had excellent results, really really pleasing. Combined set some of the kids really excelled and were delighted. A few, who have disrupted the class repeatedly, never worked in class and never did any homework had a lesson in natural consequences.
