Hi all,

Happy Friday and I hope this finds each of you well.

A few of my teacher friends recommended I post in here, and yet, if it's not appropriate I'll remove it without question...

I’m looking to do some free speaking engagements in schools and colleges to test and refine my keynote and tailor it to the needs of teachers and students so that it’s absolutely fit for purpose.

To give a bit of detail, my specialist topic is overcoming the ‘compare & despair’ caused by social media. I’ve being blogging, doing workshops and speaking about this for a while and I would now specifically like to take this message to young people aged 14 to 18 years old. (Please see this link purely for more info: www.proofcoaching.com/speaking/)

I want to try and help young people grasp some key insights that include, but are not limited to:

  • The difference between a digital identity and an offline reality
  • How to avoid obsessing over other people’s lives and beat jealousy to focus on, and commit to, their own goals and dreams
  • Dispelling the myth of ‘the perfect life’ as suggested by social media feeds
  • Become aware of the implications of sharing too much (risky pictures etc.)

Therefore, would anyone here be open to having a conversation about how I could support your PSHE and student care initiatives via some free speaking opportunities at your school or college?

Thank you so much for your time on this,

    Lucy x

Thanks very much for the comments guys - it's really useful to hear first hand the reassurances that teachers and schools need and also understand those budget constraints.

Thanks again,

Lucy x

Agree with mostlyjustaluker. Our PSCHE programme focuses on "perfect life myth" in one way or another for all year groups this term. Police and health services will also come in to speak to us for free, our police guy has lots of Facebook, Instagram etc. related sessions and leaflets which the school has approved in advance.

We don´t have any budget for outside speakers for PSCHE (we´re a private school). I´m not aware of any other schools that do.

If you were training teachers in how to lead PSCHE sessions it could be possible that schools or LEAs/independent school associations will cough up, but they´d probably want a wider range of topics to be covered.

Sorry not to be more helpful.

Is this something that psche teachers in our school teach already.

As a teacher I would want to know how would you be putting this message across? Group work or just a lecture? What is it that you can bring which their teacher can't already do? A big issue would be cost. Most schools have little spare money especially in their psche budgets. Our school would be especially concerned about an outside speaker covering anything remotely sex ed, including pornography and sexually explicit selfies as we need to ensure we agree with their message before you would be allowed in front of our students.
