First time cat owner!

Today we registered to adopt a cat from a local cat rescue charity. We visited the cat and he is so lovely, laidback and friendly! They are unaware of his background as he was a lost cat. They think he is quite young (maybe 2 or 3) and a tortoiseshell, but he is quite unusual as when you stroke his fur back it is white and dense!

Very excited for him to hopefully join our family but nervous as first time cat owners!
Any great hints or tips will be gratefully received!

@Cailleach1

You need to move those photo frames. That capacious window sill is now his sun lounge and watch tower.

He does love the windows and doors!

Ripley has arrived! He's settling in and our little girl is very excited. She was very excited to see him but we are trying to let him relax in his new home.
Had a couple of scratches (to me and my husband not my little girl) but he is generally really friendly and is wanting lots of fusses!

Fluffy yeah we are just saying he's a domestic cat, easier than trying to work it out! Haha it is interesting though Grin

Yes he seems like a laidback cat but I'm sure he will soon become the second boss of the house (after my 3 year old 🙈)

Can't wait!

Aw, he is gorgeous! I trust he and your little one will have many, many happy years together.

It is funny how their personalities/temperaments can change over time and how much of a huge presence a little cat can have in a home. I wasn't prepared to fall so deeply in love with my first cat as an adult.

As others have said, you have a boss now!

He’s probably a domestic short hair aka moggy but all cats are awesome no matter what the breed.

Remember that you will no longer be the boss in your own home. He is!

Fluffy I have googled this and I think maybe he is melanistic with tabby markings. I hadn't heard this term before, I am a complete cat novice in terms of breeds and learning every day, been researching loads and the rescue have been great giving us lots of advice Smile

He's lighter in real life, like mottled? I don't think he is a Tortie, the rescue centre vet wasn't sure what exact breed

He’s black isn’t he? Or melanistic with tabby/spotty markings.

Allergic that's why they think he's a mixed breed as doesn't look typically tortoiseshell, they said perhaps some oriental? I have attached the pics from the adoption agency.
He is adorable though Smile
We should be getting him next weekend fingers crossed!
Been and bought a tall scratching post, a few toys and litter tray etc today Grin

I'm jealous! Having a cat makes a house into a home.

I thought tortoiseshells were always female, but Allergictoironing has put me right on that. Definitely very very unusual though.

Take it slowly at first and give him some space while he gets used to his new home, but I'm sure you know that already.

Get loads of toys off zooplus, they love those fishing rod toys and really tall scratch post.

I have black cats with a dense white undercoats - the fluff gets EVERYWHERE!

I would say the fact that he's male and a tortie to be the most unusual thing, as only about 1 in 3000 torties are male. They tend to be sterile, as they have XXY genes rather than the usual male XY.

Good luck with your new family addition Smile. And remember the membership fee for the Litter Tray - pics of the new arrival Grin
