Before watching this documentary on Netflix, I didn't realise how common declawing is in the USA, and the horrific side effects of the procedure.

I actually cried watching this and made a donation to the charity of the same name, straight away.

Many many years ago when I acquired Darling Twoago, his breeders told me that they simply refused to send Siamese to the States, not only because of the declawing issue but because there was also a practice among some owners of removing voiceboxes surgically to prevent any noise from the cats.

I'm not even going to get into the issues of indiscriminate breeding and line breeding which used to go on. (I have a vague memory that Siamese might even have been removed from the American Cat Fancy for a period of time due to widely spread appalling breeding issues but I have no authoritative sources for that.)

I've been following their campaign on FB for a while now. Before that I didn't realise what declawing actually involved. I wish them (and City the Kitty) good luck in their campaign to ban declawing.

Hi Lone, yes I think it's illegal pretty much everywhere apart from the USA, where up to 25% of domestic cats, and big cats in captivity have it done, almost as a routine procedure. Horrendous!

Fortunately it is classed as mutalation in the UK and as such is illegal here.
