How do we help cat settle in?

We will be getting a cat soon, she is a friends cat, they're emigrating.

How do I help her settle in, she's used to going out and about and I'm a little worried she will disappear looking for friend and her family.

Also does anyone know where to find info about moving to the USA with pets, friend doesn't want her pet to be put thro three months of quarantine, if that could be avoided they'd take her with them. I may be over thinking it, but I feel really upset at the thought of their cat going looking for them if they leave her with us.

You're doing a very kind thing. It might also be worth giving a vets a call to see what else can be done. It's been a year or two since I last worked in one and there might some new fangled wonders out there that might help.

Thank you so much WienerDiva.

I'll suggest the cat passports to my friend and do what you suggest if it looks like we get to keep her instead. She's like family I've known friend for a long time and the cat knows us pretty well.

That's very lovely of you!

Firstly you can get pet passports, you would need to have a chat with the vets about costs and look on the DEFRA website as to how to go about when travelling to the US.

As for cat settling in, get a couple of Feliway diffusers for your home and don't let her out for at least 3 weeks (I'd be inclined to say longer if they are older but it depends on how settled the cat is).

You could also give her Zylkene tablets for a 1 week prior to moving in with you and continue those until she is comfortable with going outside and reliably returning home.
