14 wk kitten is very smelly

She is feed on purely cat food wet and dry from pets at home, she has no milk only water to drink and I don't give her any of our food, but she really is smelly with gas is there anything I can do or do I have to just put up with this.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I did think purely was a better quality food as it has 49% meat content and I think no cereal but I will check that and I will change her food to a diff brand maybe that will help? I was told by her vet to avoid supermarket type food like whiskers and Felix ect is that right. The worming/flea stuff was I think called advanced we got from the vet.

I would agree with Cozie I have never had a well kitten with smelly gas - the posh arrogant boy tried his hardest to die from enteritis when he was a kitten and his gas was terrible then (he was no match for me).
I do think that cats are funny old things and not every food suits them all. The foods that are made to look more like human food do tend to seem to be more related to tummy upsets so I am a fan of plainer foods. In the clinic for really upset cats we do use Applaws plus it is very tempting as has no other additives.
i do tend to use are higher quality food when they are growing kittens, then when they are neutered and their energy requirements drop they get a more basic food.

I don't think we try to complicate things, kazzy. You tend to get problems on this board so we have to deal with that - and on this thread alone you have likely a few centuries of cat experience - plus a vet posting.

I've never had a kitten who had smelly gas. Maybe I've been lucky but it's certainly not a given.

there might just be a simple fix to this which isnt as expensive though. rather than go for cheap food or really expensive food as your kitten may not even have any allergy but u will never know if u switch straight to the food that people have suggested on here without first trying middle of the road food which is equally as good!! i have had seven cats in total all from kitten stage so i think i know what i am talking about.

it could be a simple fix. seems that people on here try to complicate things. kittens do have smelly gas. i guess itd because their bellies are so immature and tiny

In my opinion purely is a better quality food than a lot of others, pretty high meat content, named ingredients...

It may be that something in it disagrees with her - if you are going to try changing her food, look for something of a similar quality, but with different ingredients.

Though for what it's worth one of mine is windy no matter what she's fed.

sounds like it could be ur food. cheaper food can make them smelly (have had cats for the last 12 years). science plan, james wellbeloved, purina etc biscuits are good as they are a complete dry food therefore u wont need to add meat. but if you wanted to feed the kitten meat try felix or whiskas but made in jelly. i always found the meat in gravy gave my cats diarrhoea as its too rich!

Cozie it varies with individual products. Some are better than others. Most over the counter products are very old drugs thinking 1960s. In particular OTC flea products to really effective you would need to use them every 7 days, worm products often are the paralyse and purge type which deliberately cause diarrhoea and can need to be given over several days. Modern wormers are kill wormers and the dead worms pass in normal faeces.

Circumstances have pretty well dictated that I've bought from the vet for many, many years. I think that Bob Martin have a very variable reputation. Others may wish to comment.

Hi CozietoesIe, we get the bob martin ones 2 in 1. Are they not good? We have used them for a while with no ill effect but if they cause long term effects I would like to change brands. Thanks.

Sorry. I know that meds can cost an arm and a leg but what are you buying from the supermarket? Some of the stuff they sell does not come with good recommendations I'm afraid.

Oh sorry should have added kittens under 6 months need to be wormed every month and every 3months thereafter. At least that was what my vet told us. I get ours from the supermarket now.

It is probably not the worms then. If you can try a different brand of food but it maybe something that she is prone to. My male cat was very very smelly. Would sit on your lap, drop one then bugger off leaving a lethal cloud behind. It was foul. I did a load of googling and that is where I found about cereal intolerance and found zooplus. Burns cat food was the cheapest hollistic food we could afford and the difference was amazing. He still gets wind but only if we have indulged him on treats.
Hopefully someone will come along and give you more advice. If you are lucky she may grow out of it!!!

Well it could be that she needs worming. Worms can make a cat windy! Or she is intolerant of the current cat food she is on. Some cats have great difficulty digesting the cereals present in cat food. Try her on some non cereal food. Zooplus.co.uk sell different hollistic brands. I use Burns brand for my cats and their farts have diminished drastically. You can live in the same room as them now!!
