Does anyone want to help me find us the ideal rescue dog ?

We are looking for a dog. The home we can offer has an enclosed garden with 6ft fencing, someone around 95% of the time, everyone has previously lived with a dog. We have a cat and the youngest child is late primary age. Prefer a male dog and one that is people friendly. Can work on other issues if neccessary. If I was being picky I would prefer something short haired or shortish haired and medium/large sized. Live semi-rural so loads of great local walks. Age wise , not a puppy but other than that open to all ages

Ive rescued 2 x staffies, they are amazing dogs, loyal, will be your shadow, great with kids and people, short hair, just want to play and be loved. My fkrst came from dogs trust, got him at 2yr and never had any issues with toilet training, he had some trust issuez but overcame them quickly an dhe just passed away at 14yr last year, im still gutted about it, my baby.

Then in Jan we rescued a female staffy from sspca, she is so clever, no issues toilet training, around 5yr old, came from a puppy farm but dont think she was bred much. Fantastic with people, kids, just wants to be by our side 24 7, typical staffy.

We actually went to look at a male but there were 4 others in looking at him so i walked to her kennel and fell in love straight away. I think you just get that instant bond with the right dog. Most rescues make you revisit 2 or 3 times to make sure its the right fit.

Greyhound, a greyhound did I say Greyhound. They are so lovable and chilled best breed ever. Though I'm biased as I have two. 😁😁😀

I volunteer at this municipal kennels twice a week and there are so many adorable dogs just looking for their forever human! Would take many of them home with me but I already have seven dogs...

Another vote for staffie! Especially a rescue, as most dog rescue centres are full of staffies and lurchers (a lot of ex racing). I refused my staffie X English Bull terrier a year ago this month and he is gorgeous. It sounds very dramatic but he has changed my life, I love him so much. Good luck and good on you for getting a rescue and not a puppy.

Another Staffie lover here too. We have had 5 over the years and 2 of them have been rescues. If you want a friendly dog that will be happy to cuddle up with you all day then you can't go far wrong. As others have said, each rescue dog has it's own story and therefore requires different things from a home. Talk to local centres and go from there.

When we were looking last year I contacted breed specific rescues as well as the dogs trust etc we eventually rehomed a Lhasa through the south east branch. She’s the best thing ever.

Can I join? Also looking for a rescue in Gtr Manchester area. Not fussed about breeds (Just not too big) but needs to be ok with kids of 10. Having no luck at the moment.

Many rescues aren’t open I find or aren’t taking expressions of interest yet.

So if anyone knows of a child friendly dog up for rescue in my area then let me know!

Dogs Trust have (finally!) added a "may be able to live with cats / children" filter option to their search. I wouldn't get too focused on a particular breed as you get exceptions - for example, my Nan has a whippet who is an angel with cats.
When DH looks at breeds I tell him we are getting a "whatever is in the rescue that likes cats"

There will be more dogs very soon. Dogs Trust haven't brought any from Ireland since lockdown. Heathlands, Valgrays, Black Retriever X and Border Collie Spot have been transporting in the last few weeks but there is a huge backlog of dogs here waiting to go to the UK.

Dogs Trust bring dogs over from Ireland fruit they might have some (either currently or after lockdown) suitable dogs if you are near a centre? I think they move dogs between centres too.

Contact your local rescues, fill in forms, have a chat. Don't rely on listings - a lot of rescues don't have time to keep those fully up to date and the highly-desirable cat-friendly child-friendly dogs are usually adopted so fast they don't even get a sniff on the websites.

Contact rescues, speak to them, some are doing video call interviews with remote-home checking instead of going into rescues as you would pre-pandemic times.

I’m also looking for a rescue dog. I long for a dog. Preferably collie cross or retriever cross. Or just retriever. Needs to be okay with cats and house trained. It is SO hard to find a dog in rescue. I e been looking for ages. They all either hate cats, need to be homes with other dogs or have serious behavioural issues. Those that don’t just go before they’re out on the website. I don’t want a puppy. Why is it so hard to find what I’m looking for?

There are a lot of people getting dogs at the moment due to being home so there’s a lot of competition for dogs

Would you consider a Bosnian/Romanian rescue and imported dog there’s a scruffy dog rescue on Facebook that work that way
