Ddog is very high energy and has 2 / 3 walks a day , walks total 2 and half hours week days and can be up to 4 hours weekends .
Trouble is in hot weather he still hassles for the same length of walks but gets too hot .
He went to work with dh this morning so a few hours of running around and playing and we are just back from an hour long walk , which we crossed the river 3 times so chance to paddle and cool down .
He is a staffy so not a short nosed breed but he is really suffering in this heat .
Would love to know how everyone else manages their dogs when it's hot .
So worried about heat stroke as he is so high energy .

@mumsiedarlingrevolta i use www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets/dog/dog-coats-and-clothing/dog-cooling/cool-club-elastofit-ice-blue-dog-vest-large but id recomend taking your dog in if you can (but my dog is hard to fit shes deep and wide chested)
I find it last a few hours each wetting and last 2-3 years ago before my dog starts puting holes in it but shes short

My little black dog really feels the heat.

We do an early walk and she usually sees some friends and has a play off lead. I do take water for her in one of this bottles that has a bit that you peel around and turns into a bowl. She drinks loads.
Much much shorter walk than in cooler weather. Then that's it-she sleeps all day.
Maybe a pavement/ on lead walk when it cools down in the evening.
She loves playing in the sprinkler.
@alteredHalfling I was looking at cool coats-what have you got and would you recommend??

My pooch is sleeping all day and then around 6pm he goes totally bonkers, racing around the garden, chasing his ball and by 9pm he’s out of it again. I’m struggling as I can’t walk him, he’s a rescue dog and not had his 2nd vaccinations yet so can’t walk him. Luckily for his age he’s not too energetic apart from his crazy time in the evenings. He’s 10 months old so ideally needs to be walked. I’m also recovering from surgery so can’t walk him even if a wanted too.

I bought some children football cones and poles and created an agility course in-the garden.
My dog already goes to agility so it's extra practice at home.

Short walk tonight when it cooled down a little.

I would just cut down on the walks if it’s really hot. I used to have a Staffy and he’d just keep going until he collapsed if you let him, so it was important to tell him to stop.

I have a Frenchie now and was worried about the heat but she’s been ok as we have walks that are only about 30min and we can go through the woods which are nice and shady. You could try a cooling vest or bandana.

My arthritis 10 year old lab has lay in the cool hall all day taking little stroll into the garden to bark at the pigeons on the bird feeder

I'm thinking that after last summers heatwave I should be proactive and get him a cooling coat and maybe a cooling mat too does anyone have them and are they good? Can anyone recommend any in particular?

My dog suffers in heat is black too, it help her she has a cool coat any time were out, a cool mat on her bed and a fan just for her in the bedroom and the living room, quite oftern she gets a shower too, if we take her out she goes to the woods in the shade and somewhere she can swim she loves the water (if you dogs in the car keep someone with just so they can make shore the dog dosent over heat, heat stroke is no fun)

It's still quite hot here, although not as hot as yesterday, so she's doing pretty much what she did yesterday: lying in the shade keeping cool.

Looks like it'll be another lateish evening walk.

I run with mine as his main exercise every day at 0430 before work, sometimes as late as 0700 at the weekend, so I don't change our routine much when its' warmer. Walks I will do a little later but they're often slower potters so it's less time - critical (never in the heat of the day though!). He copes very well in the heat anyway, loves to sunbathe!

Mine just has his walk early in the morning - he only ever has one walk a day anyway so I don't think the weather makes all that much difference to him!

The heat only really lasted one day. One day without a walk isn’t the end of the world. My dog slept most of yesterday (and was then awake all night), thank god it’s cooler today so I can tire him out.

Yes, it's been very windy here for several days, except today.

We managed to get a walk at about 9.15 this evening, which we both enjoyed, it was still warmish though. Hopefully tomorrow should be cooler.

Thank you everyone for the great ides . I will definitely be using some of them
Fingers crossed it's cooler tomorrow, it's suddenly got very windy here . Which is making it less stuffy .

The other thing we did last year is freeze 1-2 litre of water in a Tupperware box and then set it up overnight so a fan on the floor blows over the ice and towards where the dog sleeps. Cool air at first, melting to fresh water overnight.

He really loved that so must remember to pop some in the freezer ready for any future hot spells.

Ddog went deaf while chasing a hare this morning and got way too hot so he's on lead walks only until it's cooler.
Bed in the cooler part of the house and plenty of frozen carrots and licky mats

Up at 6.30 for a 2 mile run on the common, home before it got too hot. Lunch time a very small wee wee walk to the brook on a long line so she could jump in and out of the brook and cool down a bit, 7pm a walk along the canal, it wan't too bad had cooled down a bit, but last night she didn't walk properly til 10pm and they cancelled agility because its in a barn that gets too hot.

Ours has been in the utility room on the tiled floor with access to the shady parts of the garage des ad the house. She will get a nice walk in half an hour with the baby thunder permitting as she’s terrified of it

Two, one for each dog and set in the shade even though I have to drag them around through the day to shady areas. One ain't much bothered other jumps from one to other.
If it's cool enough when I get up tomorrow I will go to the park, shady side, if not more pools.
